Hi Debbie,
I don't think that I can help you with your search, but I am trying to track down some information on my 3rd great grandfather Joseph Chapman who was in MS circa 1861. Your mention of MS and that you have a 4th great grandfather named Joseph piqued my interest. Do you have any information about any other children of his (other than Allen Finn Chapman).
Thanks,
Corey

Hi ..
My name is Butch Jackson and I also have Canadian Chapmans for ancestors. My
GGF was born in Merrickville Ontario in 1868. I thought I had lost them but
after searching Ontario Census records I found that they moved from
Merrichville Ontario to Nippissing Ontario along the Rideau River. From there My GGF
moved to Winnepeg Man. then Down the Red River to Drayton N.D.. From what I can
decifer. My GGGF was either born in 1842-1844 in Quebec, or his Family
Immigrated there from Vermont. My Great Grandfather was James Alfred Chapman , and
my Great Great Grandfather was also James Chapman. I know Art Pattison has
tried to help me on this and I am greatful for the assistance, But We just do
not connect with our ancestors. I am looking for the 1851-1861 census of
Quebec, but alot of web sites are in French, so this might be fun

With regard to identifying Edward of Ipswich with Edward of Whitby,
Susan Bellon wrote, me in part:
>I believe I went at first on the idea from the writings of Rev.
>Jacob Chapman published first in 1778. He thought Edward was from
>Yorkshire, near Hull. From that I found the Edward in Whitby,
>Yorkshire.
Looking at the map of Yorkshire as it would have appeared in 1617,
Whitby cannot be considered "near Hull". What IS near Hull, however, is
Rowley -- very near Hull -- and it should be noted that Edward who
subsequently settled in Ipswich Massachusetts came with the Rev Rodgers
party which came from Rowley, Yorks, and established Rowley,
Massachusetts.
Accordingly, until significant evidence appears to the contrary, I would
reject the identification with Whitby. Unfortunately, then, the parentage of
our immigrant still remains unknown.
Hi Karen.
Weeks is my married name. My husband's family (Weeks) is from North
Carolina. There is, however, Weeks here that have asked me if my husband is
related.
There is a lady here who owns an antique shop in Suffolk, I think her name
is Gail Weeks. I can look it up and also her number if you'd like!
There is also another cemetery that is part of Historic St. Luke's Church,
affectionately known as "Old Brick". It's the oldest existing church of
English foundation in America, dated as having been begun in 1632. I found
several Chapman graves and listed them a couple of years ago. I have the
info on this church and you might be able to contact them regarding the
Weeks name.

Lieut. Eliphalet Chapman (d. 1813) was my 3gt gf. He and his wife
Abigail (Chase) had, to the best of my knowledge, only three
children who lived to adulthood: Abigail, Eliphalet and Huldah.
All had left Cavendish by the end of the great exodus from New
England in 1816 (the year without a summer). Eliphalet, my 2gt gf,
moved from Cavendish to Rushford, NY and eventually to
Jeffersonville, IN where he died. None of his children went to
Canada.
Abigail married a man surnamed Gordon, and at some point
(probably by 1834, possibly earlier), settled in Upper Canada (now
Ontario). More on her in a moment.
Huldah married Freeman Nickerson who became Joseph Smith's
bodyguard very early in the latter's career. Huldah, her sister
Abigail, their mother Abigail, together with five of Huldah's children,
one son-in-law and one son-in-law-to-be were baptized as Mormons
in April 1833 in Perrysburg, NY. Two of Huldah's sons were fairly
soon established in the (subsequently) Mormon community in or
near Colborne (Mt. Pleasant) Upper Canada, probably residing with
or near Abigail (Chapman) Gordon, their aunt. The sons were, of
course, both surnamed Nickerson. The rest of that Nickerson
branch moved with the Mormon settlements westward, ultimately to
Utah.
The LDS Family History records contain a notable error which
places Abigail (Chase) Chapman (Lieut. Eliphalet's widow) in a
grave in Mt. Pleasant Canada in 1818. This appears to have been
included by virtue of its inclusion in a life of Huldah (Chapman)
Nickerson written by Emory Barrus (her son-in-law). That record is
refuted by a history written by Huldah Chapman's daughter Caroline
(Nickerson) Hubbard who states that her Grandmother Abigail "then
80 years of age" was among those baptized in April 1833. (This age
at that date is consistent with her birth record.)
Although Caroline's writing includes some significant errors, I have
personally verified the list of those baptized that day by reference to
the notes made by the Mormon elders who baptized them. Abigail
(Chase) Chapman may be buried in Ontario, but it was not until after
1833, if she was. Given the residence of her daughter Abigail
Gordon and her two Nickerson grandsons, it is quite reasonable to
assume that she spent her final days with those families. (Her son
Eliphalet had not become a Mormon, and her Daughter Huldah was
embarked on the long, arduous and dangerous migration(s) of the
Mormon community from Ohio to Missouri, to Nauvoo, Illinois and
on to Utah, where she died.)
However, there would not be any Chapman surnamed descendants
of Abigail and Eliphalet of Cavendish VT living in Ontario in the early
19th Century. Since the only Chapmans descended from Lieut
Eliphalet did so from Eliphalet the son, only Nickersons or Gordons
would be found there, probably in and around Colbourne.
[For anyone on the list who might be able to help, I am still looking
for a grave record for the Mormon cemetery in Mt. Pleasant,
Ontario, and for New England birth and/or death records to prove
the existence of several children - alleged to be eleven of them - of
Eliphalet and Abigail (Chase) Chapman who did not live to
adulthood.]
Pam Does your family go back to the Weeks/Goodloes of VA in the 1600s? I
have been tracing them in hopes of finding more info on my Chapman line.

Greetings from Canada. My Chapman was named Gerard (or Jared) B. Chapman,
and had sons Orlando, and Chester, and daughters Sarah, Olive, Susannah, and
Ann (or Nancy). I believe he died around 1830. I do not know who he
married, but he had 1 child on the St Lawrence River he rented in 1801 (near
Montreal) before he moved to Hull, Quebec.
He was both a tailor, farmer, and pilot (for taking logs down the Ottwa and
St Lawrence Rivers to Montreal and Quebec City. He later built a house and
barn near Richmond, Ontario and when an eary Governor General of Canada (the
"Duke of Richmond") came to Richmond to visit Perth and the city named after
him, he ended up dead in My gggRandfather's barn (of rabies, having been
bitten earlier near Quebec City by a rabid fox).

My Ontario Chapmans came from Vermont around 1800, farmed briefly on the St
Lawrence just South west of Montreal (near Carillon), and then moved to
Wrightville/Hull, Quebec in 1802. Later they moved up the Rideau River to
the Fallowfield/Richond in Nepean Township (just south west of Ottawa)
around 1813.
I don't think there is a conection here.

Is there anyone with information on Edward Chapman born in Whitby, Yorkshire, England in 1617 and died in Ipswich, MA in 1678? I have not been able to prove his father, but think he was Robert.
Susan Bellon

This is a query from my editor, who noted my maiden name, Chapman:
<My husband's grandfather was named Almer Chapman Turner. His family came
from Ontario, Canada once upon a time. I have gone back as far as Sarah Ann
Chapman, who was born around 1834 in Milliken, Ontario, and married
Sinclair Holden Hagerman in Ontario on 20 Oct 1853 in Scarborough, Ontario.
She died in Markham Township, Ontario on 18 Jan 1904. I do not have names
of her parents or any other information about her>
Does anyone on this list have any Canadian Chapmans?? TIA
Jean
