Howdy,
So everybody doesn't get lost a few early notes. I will be discussing
Chapman family members in the Newberry SC area, 4 related churches in the
immediate area, and at least 4 of the those cemeteries.. Please take careful
note that there are many, many Giles Chapman that are descendants of Giles
Chapman son of Samuel Chapman. So when you see the name Giles know it could
be one of the many.
As you can tell I am mainly interested in this because I am interested in
restoring an old Church that was a Chapman church not only by name,
influence, and history. I have a Baptist, Universalist, and Quaker interest
in history and the future. The deed of Bethel Church was written by a
Chapman, and some of the Pastors were Chapman's of this church in the
woods. The church was built around 1890 but the grave yards predate the
church. The transfer of the deed also was done by Giles Chapman who was
married to Sallie Chapman.
BY the way the church I am working on near Myrtle Beach is indeed called
Sojourner Community and it will most likely be a Congregational Christian
Church.
I may be repeating some history you all may know, but maybe I can expand it
a little deeper (right into the woods).
Giles Chapman a Quaker moved to the Prosperity SC area with his father
Samuel Chapman around 1760. There is a web page devoted to a lot of this
information at: http://www.fdu.com/family/chapmansummerscem.htm This
Cemetery is known as Chapman-Summers or Old Dunkard. It is the burial ground
for Giles Chapman who was served in the Continental Army (note I did find
his name listed in the records for VA. On the Military Records document
listed on the Chapman Association site). He is something of an interesting
character locally in Newberry SC. In my studies on him in Universalism he
might be along with one of the Feaster's a father of the Southern
Universalist Churches.
Giles Chapman married Mary Summers a local Tunkard (Dunkard). The Summers
family is connected to the Universalist Churches for maybe as many as 4
states. It appears by tracing the influence of the Feaster, Chapman,
Clayton, Lynch (Linch), Summers) in the area we can trace a large amount of
the early Universalist churches in the south.
According to Universalist records we know that:
His great grandson, Rev. Thomas Chapman (1862 Saluda, SC--1944) was ordained
in 1889, and served at First Universalist, Hopkinsville, KY, 1916-22, coming
from Florida in 1911, and went to Hutsonville, IL in 1925.
Giles Chapman deeded the land for Bethel church and along with his
descendants is buried in the burial yard of the church. He also along with
his descendants served this church, and was at times a circuit rider. Four
known churches sit in a close proximity to one another. Bethel Church near
Saluda, Liberty Church, There was Universalist Meeting House standing at Old
Dunkard near Prosperity, Clayton Memorial Church near Newberry which is
named for D.B. Clayton.
Information about D.B. Clayton
http://www.polaris.net/sui/jpinson/pml/family/photo/739-photo.html . Please
note that D.B. Clayton, Giles Chapman, The Colemans, The Feasters, Blease,
appear to share both a religious and a family line. I haven't had enough
time to write down who married who but we can trace these family names and
given first anmes through the grave yards and records. Especially the names
Elizabeth, Elijah, and Giles.
Within a few websites we find a copy of the convention minutes of the
Universalist in SC. Within in it many of these folks are discussed including
S. (Samuel?) Chapman. http://www.fdu.com/family/elijahunivmeet.htm . The
Summers and Chapman are discussed frequently within the ranks of the
Universalist and their names appear in Dunkard (Brethren) records as well.
The Tunkards lost all their churches or maybe better said converted to a
form of Universalism. The modern records of the Brethren Church note this:
"Giles Chapman ministered at the Beaver Creek Brethern Church in Newberry SC
area - with David Martin, a Universalist Brethern minister as the main
minister. Martin died in 1796, most of the Carolina Brethern was
ex-communicated in the early 1800s."
According to the Universalist Secretary in the Universalist Convention
Yearbook we know that:
Bethel (Saluda PO), org 1887, erected 1890, wood, $2000 value, 40 members
>["Dormant", 1928] still listed as dormant in 1934 with 40 members _ A.M.
Chapman, chairman
Thomas Blease, clerk M.T. Pitts, treasurer
Please note the names on the Deed for the church include Blease, Pitts,
Chapman and a few others.
I am trying to build more information and I do have a list of those buried
at Bethel, and Prosperity. I don't think the Bethel list is available
anywhere else. I note that in the death records and marriage records for SC
I don't see many of these individuals listed for some reason.
I would like to know much more about these churches, and about the Chapman,
and like connections.
As you can see restoring this old church is going to require a lot of time,
money and effort.
We have found some of the descendants in the area of the families of the
church, but I think it will take a lot more than just a handful of people.
We have been told by the Rushton family (for whom the other Cemetery is
named at Bethel) that they were told that they could not move the church, or
maintain the church because it was owned by the State Convention. I knew
this was most likely not true because the state convention did not exist at
this point. I later learned it had died maybe as early as pre civil war. I
would found out indeed the State Convention did indeed die around the civil
war.
I have a nice older lady who is helping me organize an event to restart the
church with locals and relatives of the family of the church.
Blessings in Christ,
Neil Patrick Carrick
I'm very interested in your information on the Chapman family in the Saluda,
SC area. My earliest traceable Chapmans are living in western KY and TN, but
there are hints that they had moved there from the Carolinas before 1811.
Please do let us know when the list of Chapmans goes up on the website.

I have been doing research on the Chapman family after finding out that they
were prominent in my faith.
I have a graveyard in Saluda that is almost unknown. It is across from what
is left of Bethel Church.
You can see pictures of it at: http://www.sojourncommunity.org/bethelsc/
On about the 2nd page there are pictures of the grave yard. I have a list of
Chapman's that was sent to me. I will put the names on a web site soon. I
also hope to publish some of the information I have on the families
involved. Especially the Chapman's, Linch (Lynch), Summers, Crawfords,
Coleman, Rushton, and Blease (which is connected to the Chapman family as
well.
Also there is little better know grave yard near prosperity:
http://www.sojourncommunity.org/olddunkard/ This grave yard I believe is
known as Chapman Summers or Old Dunkard.
I am visiting the area again to try and restart the Bethel Church that the
Chapman family started.
