Pat, the movements of your family from Chester Co., PA (due west of
Philadelphia, PA) to early settlement in Frederick Co., VA suggest that
they may be Quaker. Of course PA was established as a haven for the
Quakers. You might look for a link to the Burlington Co., New Jersey (due
east of Philadelphia, PA) branch of the Chapmans. There was a Quaker
community there as well. There is some Quaker history in MD relevant to
Frederick Co., VA here:
<http://www.rootsweb.com/~quakers/monocacy.htm>. As you are probably well
aware, if your Chapmans were in Frederick Co., VA circa 1750 or before they
may connect to the Quaker family of Giles Chapman. Please keep me in the
loop.

Several of us out here on one of the Chapman branches are attempting to track down the origins of our patriarch....Thomas Chapman, who according to family records lived in Ireland. We are trying to find the location in Ireland by ascertaining the origins of related families. There are two families associated with our Chapmans....in Frederick Co, VA, Berkeley Co, VA/WV and possibly Jefferson Co, VA/WV. The WV counties, incidentally, are in the WV eastern panhandle and the VA county borders on the panhandle.
The families connected to our family are LEMON and MERCER. Lucy Chapman (daughter of Thomas Chapman) born ca 1700 to 1720s married James Lemon. The MERCERs married into our family, but we don't have names and dates. The Mercers accompanied our Chapmans to America. Has anyone else run across Lemons and Mercers in their research in the above named counties. Thanks much. Pat Pulasky
Can anyone help her with this???

Glen you can find information on orphans in Orphan Court Minutes in Knox Co
TN. in the Probate Court Offices. In some states they are listed different. It
has been my experience that when one parent died the surviving spouse had to
apply for guardianship. or if both died. sometimes the children were placed
with a male relative . At times they were apprenticed. to learn a trade in
exchange for food clothing and keep. The records would tell you which was done.
Often the name of parents death date siblings etc. Bettye Vann Knight
Greatgrandfather, JAMES O. CHAPMAN, b. abt. 1820-1824, probably Knox County,
was orphaned as a yound boy. Raised in the home of a Mr. VAUGHAN/VAUGHN, in TN.
Parents and siblings unknown. Also have no information on Mr. Vaughan.
JAMES Father was b. KY, Mother b. TN.
Any information or recommendations on how to find information on orphaned
children in TN early 1800's would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to find info on Edward Chapman b. c 1852 in MA. I don't know who his parents or siblings were. On the 1880 census of Russell, Hampden Co. MA he is there with a wife, Essie A. Chapman and two children: Hattie B. b.c1876 MA. and Alice L. b.c 1878 MA. I am interested in Alice in particular. She married Charles H. Gaffney in c1894MA. Can anyone help? Thanks, Gramma007
I'm looking for information on the children of either Jobe CHAPMAN or Uriah CHAPMAN, both of whom are listed on the 1810 census in Genesee Co., NY.
Jobe was living in Northampton and Uriah was living in Riga.
Thanks,

SW PA. specifically Beaver Co., PA. From what little data I have, your

grandfather. I have not confirmed which of Thomas or Joseph is the father of
my gg grandfather John W? Chapman b. 1794, Beaver Co., PA, d. Allen Co., IN
(no date). My g grandfather was William Chapman b. 1830, Stark Co., OH. Do
you have any info. to add to this? How about other siblings?

Hi Chapman Cousins: I'm back, after an extended period of non-research. I'm hoping that someone has come up with some great discoveries on the William Chapman-Elizabeth Cullen family in Frederick County, VA.....residence approximately 1745 to 1800 or so. William (son of Thomas Chapman) was born ca 1724 in Ireland, died prior to 1757 in Frederick Co, VA. Children of William Chapman and Elizabeth Cullen were: Jean or Jane, ca 1745; George, 1747; John, 1749; Joseph, 1750; Thomas, 1752; William, 1754.
The only child of William and Elizabeth for which I have specific data is George, born 1747, married Johannah/Joanna Lemaster in 1775 in Berkeley County, VA/WV. From Berkeley County, George and Johannah moved to the northern panhandle of VA/WV to Brooke County (which later became Hancock County). I will be happy to share my info on this family.
It's thought that perhaps John Chapman born ca 1749 may have moved to SW PA. If anyone has info on a Chapman family in SW PA, any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Pat Pulasky
