Do You know when John Pendelton Chapman moved from Union County Ky? Also do
you know names of sons and birth dates? I would really appreciate any info
you can give. Needless to say, if we hit I can give you all I have of the
Chapmans in Texas.
Corey, Dr. A.W. Chapman is frequently mentioned in a book by Betty F.
Powell, "History of Mississippi County Missouri, Beginning Through
1972." I do not know his connection, if any, to my Chapman family, but
there are several branches of the family which I have not run down. It may
be that the "A" in his name stands for "Andrew." FYI much of this line
comes out of John Pendleton Chapman who died in Mississippi Co., MO, on 8
Aug 1884. He moved there from Union Co., KY after the death of his
wife. He apparently suffered financially after the Civil War and appears
to have been working as a sharecropper. The J.B. Chapman in Mississippi
Co., MO is his son, John Bell Chapman, sometimes called "Judge" Bell
Chapman. My line is through another of Pendleton Chapman's sons, Guy
Brooks Chapman, who died in Mississippi Co., MO, on 15 Oct. 1907. I have
several Chapman lines with substantial numbers of children in Mississippi
County, MO in the late 1800s, so if you see a Chapman there, he was
probably somehow related to my bunch. Anything you find there I would love
to have. I have been told that there are at least two articles in the
local paper about Guy Brooks Chapman -- one of them about how he got drunk
and ran the Baptist preacher out of town, and a second where he "got
religion" and joined the First Christian Church. The story I was told by
my great aunt was that Guy Brooks Chapman was a Catholic who married a
Baptist and they compromised and joined the Christian Church. I believe
that this was the G-rated version of the story. I still have close
relatives in Cape Girardeau, MO and Paducah, KY, so keep in touch. Maybe
we can organize a reunion someday.

Being new to this list I probably picked up late in this research topic. What I
read in the following caused my memory to jog, a bit of history about the
-general- time and place: the Mormon movement. Many were murdered, many died of
hardship; but it could account for some folks gone missing.

Mike,
I looked through what you have and unfortunately nothing sounds familiar. While I was doing some research on the Mississippi Co., MO Chapman's I found a few references to a Dr. Chapman? Is he one of yours or from a different group of Chapmans.
Fortunately, Mississippi Co, MO is only a few hours drive from me, so on my next weekday that I have off, I'm going to go tooling on down there and see if I can dig some things up in the county courthouse and older churches. There has to be some record of where the Andrew Chapman's I found in the census came from or went to.
I appreciate your help, and if you can get back to me about Dr. Chapman I'd appreciate it. Also, if there's anything you'd like me to look for while I'm in Mississippi Co., let me know, I'd be happy to pass on whatever I find.

Corey, my Chapman family moved to Mississippi Co., MO after the Civil War,
having moved there from Union/Henderson Co., KY where they settled after
the Revolutionary War. Prior to that time they were in Frederick Co.,
VA. More information about the branches of the family that I have
researched can be found at the following
address:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mchapman/James%20Chapman.html. A
branch of the family includes a Revolutionary War soldier Joseph Chapman of
Adair Co., KY who had a son named Dohoney/Dehonig (many variations) Chapman
who had "moved away to the remote parts of Missouri" by 1847. I have a
line with an Andrew Chapman who moved to Van Buren Co., AR (north central
Arkansas) which is not far from Mississippi Co., MO. My Chapman family was
not actually found in the state of Mississippi, however, so if that is
where your census records show your Andrew Joseph Chapman was born then he
may not be connected to this branch of the family. I am happy to compare
notes. Check out the web page and see if anything rings a bell for you.

Hi everyone,
I went to the library today to do some research on my great great grandfather Andrew Joseph Chapman and came across two things that piqued my interest. As some of you may remember, I've always been told (corroborated by the censuses) that Andrew was born in Mississippi (1861) but somehow became orphaned (presumably) at an early age. On his marriage license (1883) Andrew is listed as a resident of St. Louis, MO, so on a long shot I did a state wide search for Andrew in the 1880 census. Much to my surprise, there were two Andrew's (1 for Andrew and 1 for Andy) of approximately the right age, and both were located in a county called MISSISSIPPI. Mississippi County Missouri is in the South East corner of the state and borders Kentucky. So, I'm wondering if anyone out there is researching Chapman's in the SE corner of Missouri and the western areas of Kentucky that knows of a Joseph Chapman (death est. before 1870) that had a son named Andrew Joseph Chapman (born 1861)?
The second item that piqued my interest comes from a listing in 1885/86 St. Louis City Directory. I don't know about other city directories, but the St. Louis ones list the persons name, occupation/employer and residence. Anyhow, there is an Andrew Chapman listed with a notation of "team." next to his name, presumably his occupation. Any ideas on what that abbreviation means? Best I can come up with right now is Teamster, but I really don't know what a Teamster is/does.
Thanks,
Corey Chapman

Does anybody know anything about a Lydia CHAPMAN who is listed on the 1830
census in Eaton Twp., Lorain Co., Ohio? She was between age 30-40 and had a
male age 15-20 living with her. I don't find her on the other census and I
can't seem to connect her with any of the other Chapmans in the county. I'm
trying to determine if she might be the mother of my Orvis A. Chapman. Was
Chapman her maiden name or her married name? Did she die after that census?
Move away? Get married? I need all the help I can get.
Thanks,

Nancy Ann Napier, b. 1776, married Charles Woodley King in February 1798.
They lived in Nicholas County, (W)VA. Charles died November 19, 1825. I have
seen a reference to a second marriage to John Chapman, nothing else. Her
sister Dicey Napier, b. 1772 in VA, d. in Harlan County, KY, abt 1834,
married John Chapman, Sept. 7, 1791. Could she have married her deceased
sister's husband? I hope someone recognizes these names. Nancy Ann is my 4
great grandmother.

Searching for help on George Henry Jackson Chapman for the Newberry or Edgefield County South Carolina in the 1860. This is my great grandfather and I know nothing about him. Please help.
Margie
I would love to go the CHAPMAN reunion, but will be working. Please if anyone hears the name George Henry Jackson Chapman please write it down. I think my great grandparents dropped from the sky. My grandmother was Lula Rebecca Chapman born somewhere in 1868 and died in Augusta Ga 1927. I was told her father was George Henry Jackson Chapman, but I can't seem to find anyone that knows this name. Supposedly they came from around Saluda/Ridge Spring/Batesburg area.
Thank you, Margie
Thank you, because as of now I think they dropped from the sky. I can't
find anyone or anything on the line I sent you. Anything helps at this
time.

Barry:
My gr-gr-grandmother, the son she was living with in Corning, NY and her
grandson in Bath, NY were all missing in the 1880 Census. I noticed that
first in the 1800 Census CDs, then have been searching the actual microfilms.
After I queried the county list, someone wrote back and said she had people
who had been missed in 2 separate census enumerations, so I guess it does
happen!
Have you tried searching (Google) for merchant marine records? I've been
searching 18th century shipping records which are a bit hard to find (oh,
if I were only in or near Boston!), but I should think a lot of records
around the 1920s are extant, and perhaps even on microfilm.
Good luck!

Maggie, I'm researching Mary Ann CHAPMAN, dau of Gersham CHAPMAN and Mary
(unknown).
Gersham CHAPMAN (b. MA) was on the Federal Census in 1820 in Columbia,
Richland County, South Carolina.
dau Mary Ann CHAPMAN (b. 23 OCT 1789, d. 15 DEC 1872) m. (1st) Dr. John
HOOKER, m. (2nd) George Washington GLENN
Children of George Washington GLENN and Mary Ann CHAPMAN:
Dr. George Washington GLENN, Jr.
Maria Sophia GLENN (m. Robert C. GILLAM)
Caroline Henrietta GLENN (m. Rev. William B. TELFORD)
Sarah Julianna GLENN (m. James H. MIMS)
John Edward GLENN
Rebecca Eleanor GLENN (m. Dr. James Law BROWN in South Carolina)
There is a Family Bible record available for Gersham CHAPMAN. I have ordered
a copy from a genealogical society, but it has not arrived yet.
Have a great day!

Thanks to Kaye Powell of Texas for her comments & suggestions. Could any other lister advise me/answer my questions about men serving on merchant ships at the time of the 1920 census?
The person I am researching is Dudley Edward Chapman, born Oct 1879, Benton Twp, Daviess Co, MO, living at the family farm there till 1894, then lived in Atchison Co. KS from 1894 to 1898/99. In 1898, at the start of the Span-Am War, along with his older brother George Washington Chapman, he enlisted in the 22nd Kansas Volunteer Infantry. While the 21st KVI, along with General Frederick Funston, fought in the Philippines & made their reputations there, Dudley and the rest of the 22nd KVI mainly survived without uniforms, living in tents in a Virginian swamp & foraging for their food! After 7 months of semi-starvation & disease, the 22nd returned to Kansas and the volunteers were discharged.
In the 1900 census, Dudley was enumerated with his uncle, aunt and children, on their farm, in Benton Twp, Daviess Co. MO. In the 1910 census, Dudley was enumerated in S.Dakota, working as a farmhand. In 1920/21, age 41, he married Vernie Miles Hatfield(place & actual marriage date unknown) and from 1925/26 till his death in Jun 1952, he worked the 1200 acre Hatfield farm/ranch near Jolly, Clay Co. Texas.
It is believed that Dudley may have served as a merchant seaman around the time of WW1 and may still have been a seaman at the time of the 1920 census.
Therefore, could SKS answer the following questions for me:-
a) Would a seaman serving on a US registered merchant ship have been enumerated in the 1920 census? If so, where would I be able to access those census records for serving seamen?
b) If a US citizen was serving on a foreign owned & registered merchant ship, is it likely that he would have been missed by the 1920 census?
Thanks in anticipation.
