Rupert;
No, unfortunately I have no information on where James O. Chapman and Mary Jane
moved to in Miss. I think (cannot verify this) that after being in Perry
County, AL in 1850 census they may have located for a time in Tuscaloosa
County, AL.
This is where I am stuck. Since folks, in that era, seemed to migrate with
relatives or toward relatives there was probably some kin in Miss. I have not
found any information either of where Mary Jane was during the war. Assuming
again that she either sustained herself and children or lived with kin. Wish I
could find somthing along these lines.
We, myself and another Chapman researcher, believe that the two daughters I
referred to were named; Martha Ellen / Ellen Martha, and Ruth. There has been
some mention that either one or both married in Bienville Parish, LA, and
remained there while the family was enroute to Texas.
My Grandfathers name was WILLIAM JASPER CHAPMAN and like his father he never
used his full name, always going by W.J. Chapman.
If we have no ties I would certainly appreciate you keeping me in mind if you
come across anything that might be helpful or informative.
Thanks
Glen Hamilton

Please tell me if anyone is tracing the Saluda County South Carolina Chapman? My grandmother was Lula Rebecca Chapman, her father was George Henry Jackson Chapman. Lula was born in Saluda County South Carolina in 1886. I know nothing of her family. NEED HELP.
Jeff,
Where was your George Chapman from and when was he born? We have a lot of
George Chapmans in our line.

In reference to the below info, I made a mistake. My Chapman came from Lycoming Co. PA, not Indiana. I thought I had put that in there correctly! Guess not!

Harold,
I am responding to your message regarding the Indiana Chapman from PA. I also have an ancestor from Indiana, supposedly Lycoming County, born 1815 by the name of John Hall Chapman. He is my brickwall. I haven't been able to tie him into other families in that county yet. The time period for yours is close to mine.
My John came to Columbiana County Ohio sometime before 1839, when he married Mary Hawley there. In the 1840's, they moved to Mercer County, Ohio. They lived near Wabash Ohio and it is my understanding that they crossed the state line on a very frequent basis. In fact, he was buried in Jay County, IN. I have seen other Chapmans in Mercer Co. and couldn't tie them in to my John. I know they too probably traveled back and forth in the two states.
Several of my ancestors descendents also lived in Indiana for a few years, (specifically Whitley Co. for sure) so I think there is a possibility that somehow, John was related to a couple other Chapmans around this area.
I would be interested in sharing more info to see if maybe we have some similar family names. Maybe we would make a connection!!

Tracy,
It is good to see your post again as my family is from Indiana also. I grew
up in northern Indiana and my relatives are spread widely but most are in
north-central Indiana. I see no connection to your line because my William
Chapman was born in Beaver Co., PA in 1830 and buried in Winamac, IN. He died
in 1914. There have been only a couple of responses of people connected to my
line therefore there is only speculation about my William's father. I would
welcome a response from anyone who might be connected to my line or know of
information leading to the parents of my William Chapman. Have a good day.

May I suggest reading "The Seven Daughters of Eve", and I'm sorry, I have
forgotten the author's name. A PBS special was made of this book last year,
which got me interested enough to read the book. It is a bit technical in
parts, but it will give you a very clear understanding of where we all came
from and how we all relate. As a disclaimer, I have nothing to gain, in
anyway, from recommeding this book.
Hank Chapman
Barry,
Sam and his siblings Albartis, John, Armour J., Harris, J.W., and
Pernicia were all born in KY, Armour J. in 1811 appears to be the eldest (so
far as I have yet been able to find). As you say, this appears to be even
further indication that our lines are connected. Sam and his siblings are my
collective brick wall, and all I have been able to glean is the suspicion, as
yet unprovable, that their parents were William Chapman and Nancy
Story/Storey, who are reputed to have migrated to KY from the Carolinas.
While this might account for the occurrence of the names William and Nancy
among the children of this generation, these are such popular names that I
don't really regard this as significant.
Best wishes,
Rupert

William Sherman Chapman and his children interest me very much. My own brick
wall is Samuel Singleton Chapman, born in KY in 1820, whose family were in TN
shortly after that time, one of his older brothers marrying in Hardeman Co,
TN in Nov., 1828. Among the children of Sam Chapman is a John Wiley Chapman,
apparently named after one of Sam's brothers, and William Robert Chapman
(born 1859 - my ggrandfather). The names John Wiley Chapman and Davis Green
Chapman recur among the children of several of Sam's siblings. Several of
the brothers moved to Yalobusha Co, MS in the 1830s and 1840s, and J.W.
Chapman, brother of Sam Chapman, moved to Texas in 1845. I don't know
whether any of this might be of any use, but I thought I would post it just
in case.

Hello Glen Hamilton,
I have no special information about your James O. Chapman, but I am
intrigued to discover that he seems to have served in the same unit as my
gggrandfather, Samuel Singleton Chapman. Sam was born in KY in 1820, but the
family moved to TN shortly thereafter, and some of Sam's older brothers had
settled in Yalobusha Co, MS by 1840, where he joined them by 1844. Do you
have any information on where your J.O. Chapman was living before he joined
the army? It might be possible that he was a cousin of my Sam Chapman, if
the families were related and migrating together.
Best wishes,

Regarding DNA testing: My BALL side of the family is doing DNA testing. I
sponsored the test for my last (known) remaining male with the BALL name. It
cost me $100.00. The person I contacted is Steven C. Perkins,
sperkins(a)interaccess.com
I am sure he would have the information you are seeking.
Good Luck,

Be careful how you live, you may be the only "bible" some people will ever
read.
I'll post my brick wall once again. My uncle Francis Stuart Chapman
(called Stuart by family), b 4 Jun 1993 in New York (not sure if NYC or in
upstate Oneonta), ran away from home abt 1900 (his mother had died when he
was 13 and Dad 5, and Grandpa remarried a woman with 2 girls).
Family tales say he "went South (NC or GA), married a Southern
girl." Grandpa got a couple of letters from him, but they were not saved.
I have found a Stuart Chapman in the 1910 census: single, 25 yrs (he was
almost 27, but his data may have been given by someone else), Leaksville
Township, Rockingham County NC, weaver in a cotton mill, boarding with a
family. This sounds as if it ought to be my uncle Stuart.
1920 Census shows a Frank S. Chapman, single, 34 yrs (he would have been
37), b NY, in Winston-Salem, Forsyth Co. NC, again boarding, a landscape
gardener. This also may be Stuart.
I checked WWI Draft Cards at the Atlanta Archives for Rockingham, Forsyth
and Guilford Counties, and didn't find him. Next time I get to Atlanta
maybe I can search other counties, but it's difficult, not knowing where he
lived.
Any clues gratefully received. My middle name is Stuart, so maybe that's
why I like to find anything more about him!
Mari,
just posted a note to the list using the reply feature and noticed that it
had prepared to send the reply to the original poster, NOT to the list, as
it used to be. Had to exit the note and do a reply all to make sure that
the response went to the list.
Have you changed the way responses are handled now? or could it be something
with hotmail?
Thanks

There is a pretty good explanation of the DNA testing at
http://www.frankdillman.com/dnaindexb.html
I had originally posted the query about DNA testing for Chapman's after
hearing about the Dillmann Family Assoication's project. It seemed like a
great idea, but I couldn't participate as myconnection is on my mom's side
and they are testing just on the male line as it is easier and less
expensive.
I had hoped that maybe the CFA was doing something for the Chapman's, but
since I didn't receive a response I quess not. But then I'm not sure if they
monitor this list or not.
Should anyone hear of any organization doing Chapman DNA, please post to the
list.
Thanks!

Hello everyone;
It has been a while since I posted my CHAPMAN brickwall. Searching for:
JAMES O. CHAPMAN, b. abt. 1820-24, TN. m. MARY JANE WILLIAMS, b. abt 1830, Bibb
County, AL. They were m. Mar. 28, 1848 in Bibb County, AL. J.O. CHAPMANS Father
b. KY, Mother b. TN. MARY JANE WILLIAMS Father b. GA, Mother b. GA.
1850 census finds them in Perry County, AL with no children listed in household
but a JANE WILLIAMS, age abt 61, b. GA in the household. Assume this is MARY
JANES Mother.
JAMES O. CHAPMAN enlisted in Co. E, 3rd, Mississippi infantry, State Troops, in
Startville, MS, Feb. 1864. His unit was surrendered at Vicksburg, MS, July 4,
1864 and he was paroled July 11, 1864.
My Grandfather, WILLIAM J. CHAPMAN, son of J.O. and MARY JANE, b. 1847, AL.
Believe there were two children older than he - probably sisters.
Anyone having any connection or information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Glen Hamilton

No....things are still the same, John.
I sent it in as a redirect. You may not see it unless you look at the full
headers.
The clue is in the subject line......(not a subscriber) will be there in a
redirect from me.......
Jeff is now subbed to the list, so there won't be that confusion again. :))

Dna is a tool, not a cut and dried solution.
It CAN tell you which immigrant you fall from ( paternally) and
whether you and someone else have a 99.9% chance of being from a common
ancestor. (Paternal Cousins or siblings). It can also tell you that
there is a BREAK in your lines and somehow someone was added to the
family...
If there are several immigrants it can help sort who comes from who,
and therefor focus future research.

Genealogy is the art of the living haunting the dead....
Heritage is the anchor in the sea of life,
holding us steady, giving us a standard to live up to or beyond,
a compass for our course, and a place to call home.
