Having read most of the posts about Fields Chapman and other related posts
over the past few days, it wasn't until someone posted the marriage of
"Little Joe" Chapman to Mary Elizabeth Ellenburg that I had to revisit my
database.
I remember finding this connection when working on my son's genealogy. I
knew they had married into the Chapman family -more than once...also from
this line was:
Mae Ellenburg (born circa 1900) married an unkown Chapman
This make the third line of Chapman's I have worked my way into. I have
very litttle on this line and would love to share with nayone interested. I
would also like to know more about the book this data was in and how it
might be obtained.
Regards,

Jack,
If you have the descendents of Joseph Chapman of Halifax County, VA. Will
you please post it. I know that my Enoch "Tobe" Chapman is from this line,
but sure who his father is. I do know that Enoch "Tobe" Chapman and Jackson
Chapman are brothers and the book also says he had a brother named John. My
Enoch "Tobe" Chapman was born 1813 or 1815 (I have seen both dates) and is
burried in McKinnley Cemetery, in Pickens County, SC. I have assumed that
Joseph is his grandfather and that Enoch (son of Joseph) is his father, do
you know for sure if this is the way it goes or not. Thanks for your help.

The book is really nice. I have not been able to connect my Chapmans with their family but feel sure there is a connection. I believe I paid 18.00 plus postage, and it certainly is worth more as they have done a lot of work and didn't want to print what they didn't feel they could reasonably document. Documentation is not always what everyone wants; hard copies of documents. Sometimes we have to take oral history given to a family and presume that is true. I try to remember each person researching has some oral history that is only written down by one person, for instance my Mom's written records of her family and truly I have found some problems with them which my Mom had idea existed. So, we must all help, and search and share. Book is worth the money. Loretta Moon Forrester

Bettye,
I am the ggggrandaughter of Enoch "Tobe" Chapman of Eastoe Valley, SC. I
descend from his son Joseph who moved to GA and then settled in DeKalb
County, AL. I also have this book but it does not list the descendants of
Joseph Chapman and Dorcas ODell Young as they moved away to Alabama, but I do
have these descendants. Could we be related?

I really hate to be picky, but with several hundred of us
reading posts, it behooves each of us to read our own posts
before we send them and to send pertinent information such as

Mike Chapman:
Thanks again for responding to my message about your James and my John
Chapman/Donaho. If James was a lone immigrant and had a separate son John,
I think that fairly well removes the possibility that they were related.
If you have any bits and pieces regarding my John, I'd sure like to look at
them. You mentioned a will.
Most of what I know and suspect can be found here:

As for the CFA meeting, I'd sure like to attend, but I think I'll wait for
one to be held in Southern California (75 degrees here today). I hope the
meeting in Virginia helps shed some more light on those various Chapman
families from there. I might even have to pay my dues this year to find
out!
Tom
Bettye, my Joseph Chapman, son of James Chapman of Frederick Co., VA, died
in Adair Co., KY with a wife named Catherine.
It is my understanding that Joseph Chapman, son of Giles Chapman, died
about 1820 in the Newberry District, SC. At the time of his death he was
married to his second wife, Penelope Summers. Several of the genealogies I
have seen floating around the web show him married first to Catherine
Anderson. That may be right or that may be wrong. I don't know for
sure. I have not seen a source showing the marriage of Joesph Chapman, son
of Giles Chapman, to Catherine Anderson. As I understand it, the usually
excellent Quaker records which would have shown this marriage are believed
to be among those destroyed by a fire at the Hopewell Meeting (Frederick
Co., VA). I don't have a birth, marriage or death record for Catherine
Anderson. I simply have a secondary reference to a deed (the original of
which I have not seen) which shows that Catherine Anderson and her husband,
Joseph Chapman, sold land in Frederick Co., VA on 6 April 1772. If that is
all anyone is going on, that is not much evidence. The original deed
records may show that Catherine Anderson and Joseph Chapman were in
Newberry, SC when the deed was made. That to me would be clear evidence
that we are talking about the Joseph who was the son of Giles Chapman. But
since I don't have the original record, I don't know.
I have just today located a secondary reference to Bartholomew Anderson's
will which names Catherine Anderson "and her four youngest
boys." Frederick Co., VA Will Book 2, p 139. I don't have good records to
all of my Joseph Chapman's children; he is said to have had seven
children. I know the names of his four girls, at least three of which
(Jenny, Frances and Elizabeth all married Hezekiah Rhodes Dehoney). That
fact alone may eliminate my Joseph Chapman, son of James Chapman, since it
appears that he did not have four boys.
Did Joseph Chapman, son of Giles Chapman, have (at least) four boys? If
so, that is strong positive evidence that he is the man who married
Catherine Anderson. The genealogy at
http://www.chapmanfamilies.org/gen_giles.html shows Joseph Chapman, son of
Giles Chapman, with four boys but two were by his second wife, and two of
those boys were born after Bartholomew Anderson's death. This makes me
scratch my head a bit about why Catherine Anderson is connected to that
Joseph Chapman.
References to the deed transactions on Bartholomew Anderson's land can be
found at Frederick Co., VA Deed Book 15, pp. 59, 188, and 306; and Deed
Book 16, pp. 38, 210, and 267. These records will be essential for
locating any additional information on who Catherine Anderson
married. Also, a marriage record would not hurt!
Thanks again for following up, and please, let's keep in touch.

I haven't been watching the Chapman info lately so hope I'm not asking
something that has just been discussed. I'm searching for the parents of my
Mary G. Chapman, b. 1816 in La. A while back, someone thought that a Rudolph
Shirley Chapman might be her father. I no longer have the email but I
imagine his dob was around 1790 or so....and believe he was from the
Carolinas or Virginia. Anyone have any information on him?
Thanks

You remind me of my 3rd gr-grandfather, Abner Pier, fighting in the MA
militia in NY's Mohawk Valley. Indian Joseph Brant and his troops had swept
up the Susquehanna Valley, killing people and cattle, burning houses (even
the Tories complained about his depredations!) . Near Stone Arabia, my
Abner was seized by one of the Indians. Brant caught him and said "No
prisoners. Kill that man." The Indian shot and scalped him, then a Tory
came along and said "That d----d Yankee isn't dead yet" and shot him
again. Abner lived, got back to MA somehow, married, moved to Otsego
County NY and had lots of children. I've teased out so much of this story
from various county histories, but always wondered how he got back to MA.
I would NEVER have thought to look in a History of Schenectady, but that's
where I recently found a nugget! I was trying to find the first name of
the General whose troops were supposed to come to the aid of Abner's
company (thought it was promised, the sob was having dinner with someone
high up in gov't circles, so didn't show up till the next day, when the
captain and half of the company lay dead and dying!). My search took me to
the Schenectady site, which, evidently on testimony from some pension
files, told about the Schenectady soldiers taking the wounded on bateaux
(boats) to Schenectady where a doctor took care of their wounds! Ain't
the internet wonderful??
Jean
Doris, the list is created by PAF5 the LDS free genealogy program, using a
report called Decendents of XXX. I also have a little problem reading these
things but what you do is start with number 1. Any 2's are children of 1.
Under each 2 you will see 3's which are the previous 2's children until you
come to another 2 which takes you back to the previous 1 and is another
child of 1, or 4 which is a child of a 3. Under each number you may see
several higher numbers each meaning children's children.
You can post your own records using this method, or a GEDCOM file can be
created that you can incorporate into your own genealogy software. This is
not real easy for everyone but not too hard to do. You have to be careful in
importing into an existing file as you can wind up with duplicates. I prefer
to just read over the Report and post my own. The GEDCOM file, if you use
it, also contains misc notes, etc that can be very useful.
I hope this is clear:
