Can anyone tell me what an Ashery is? Sentence read as follows: An Ashery was
built in 1844, which was worked but a few years. This was pertaining to town
of Conewango, NY in the early years. Thank you in advance........Brenda
I am in the middle of copying a roll of film with nothing but Chapman data
on it. In doing so, I found correspondences to Union County, IL. I
actually rented a reader so I wouldn't have to compete for one at the
history centers or libraries. Consequently, I'm not paying too much
attention to the details.
I do know this roll contains a great deal of civil war letters and various
other letters to and from members of my line. At this stage this is first
hand data that they went to Union County, IL. Unfortunately, I wasn't
paying that much attention. I am going through the nearly 600 images I
captured to try and locate those letters again.
I was hoping to catch someone already working in that area. Perhaps I can
make some connections.
I will post again when I find it and perhaps even put the transcription on
the list for all to see.
Please, if anyone does have Chapman's inUnion County, IL during this time
frame, I would love to correspond with you.
Regards,
Maria
Karen-
Our John Chapman wife Mary (Nichols) Chapman had 14 children. Of course, one was named John. John Jr. was born 6 Sept 1800 and died 6 June 1853 in Fulton NY. He was involved with the baptist church there. He married Annis Wood. Does not seem to connect to your folks. We do have kin in Granby and other towns in central New York.
Sorry cannot help further. We sure wish we knew of siblings and parents for John Chapman Sr. - that's been our brick wall. Census records and his will shows he acquired ownership of property belonging to a Samuel Chapman in Pittstown who was his next door neighbor in 1790 and in 1810 property that had earlier belonged to another John Chapman in Hoosick, NY. Can only speculate about a connection to these other Chapmans.

John Hill,
Do you have any siblings or descendants for your John Chapman? I have a John

The earliest I find him is in Manlius/Fayetteville, Onondaga County, NY
1830's.
Thank You,

Mary,
I think we've e-mailed before but not about Ezekial.....I think my John R.
may be linked to him and maybe Moses but can not find out how! It's very
frustrating. There was also a Nathan Randel that was an Attorney from
Stonington, CT......but I can't find a thread there either.
John R. Chapman's wife was Sophronia Huntley and a Huntley researcher said
John was buried in Kirkville down the road from Manlius......which makes me
wonder if his Chapman's may have been from Madison County.
I've been working on John R. for about 6 months now, next step may have to be
the Historical Society. I've sifted through the Onondaga County site.....it's
wonderful!
His children's names were Celestia 1833, *Adelbert 1844 and Eugene 1847 (not
names from the Huntley side).
Are you linked to Ezekial?
Karen
Karen in FL..........
Do you have siblings for your Chapman in Manlius/Fayetteville Onondaga Cnty,
NY????
I have an Ezekiel Chapman as head of household in Manlius in 1820 Census.
Just wondering if there could be a connection? He is my "mystery" man!!
Everyone seems to have one......lol

Is anyone researching the Franklin County Indiana Chapmans? I believe that
William and Sarah Chapman (b 1796, 1798) both from Delaware might be the
parents of my Thomas Chapman. Thanks, Pam

Let me add my congratulations. Glad to hear of your success.
Let me know if your research touches Westchester Co, NY. Our brick wall as you know is John Chapman b 18 April 1764 d 9 oct 1817. We think he was born in Connecticut with DAR records showing service in the Westchester Co., NY militia.

After ten years of searching for Roswell Russell Chapman
we have found his parents as well as the parents of his
wife Rhoda Gray!! My sister made the discovery and we
are so excited!
We had been looking in the wrong county all the time.
We were sure he had been in Washington Co., NY, but
now we know he was baptized in 1781 in Columbia Co.,
NY.
My sister came across a Rhoda Gray in Columbia Co.
and, on a hunch, wrote to the Columbia Co. Historical
Society asking if they had any information, such as birth,
baptismal or marriage records for her. They sent her a
copy of a baptismal record for her, showing her parents
as a Cooley Gray and wife Ruth. On the very next line
was listed a Roswell Russell Chapman. They had been
baptized the same day! So now we know they knew each
other and grew up in the same town of New Canaan, NY.
I've always believed the records of our ancestors are out
there somewhere, if we persevere. Very exciting news
for us. Now we have to start looking into a Joseph
Chapman and wife named Content who are listed as
Roswell's parents. Anyone researching Columbia Co.
Chapmans? As I said, this is a new county for us.

I came across over 100 Chapman names in the Kentucky Patents Database
located at this
address:
<http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~amxroads/Data/kyland.html>. The
land patent dates range from 1783 or so through the mid-1800s. In addition
to the many Chapman names listed it is very interesting that quite a number
of the other surnames (Willard, Austin, Loft, McFadden, etc.) have a given
name of Chapman, indicating a possible Chapman family connection. The data
is sorted by date, surname, county, acreage, book and watercourse. This is
a treasure trove of information for Chapman researchers.

Darn, Mike...well I'll wipe my eyes and trudge on. We can't let a little
chuck hole in the road of genealogy to stop us!
Thanks for responding so promptly. Maybe a little more tossing and you'll
have another tip!

Sniff sniff ... I found out our B. Chapman is a 38 year old female in 1850,
born in New York and who perhaps was a teacher at the "female academy" in
Union Co., KY. Check this out at:

Dee, as I was rolling around in the bed this morning it occurred to me that
I may have a lead for you. I don't know if it will be of any help, but I
remembered something odd that I found on the Union Co., KY gene page
listing the 1850 census for Union Co., KY. There is listed there among a
bunch of my Chapmans a "B. Chapman," age 38, from New York that I have not
been able to place with my crew. I don't know if this will be of any help
to you, but it may be something to check out. You can find this reference
on line at
<http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ky/union/census/1850/indx02.txt>.
Hope this helps.
Mike Chapman
I;m sorry none of your family names match what I have at this time but will keep a copy in my file (Not Yet). haa Wish I could help you Thelma. Loretta
Dee, a connection seems unlikely to me. This family originated in
Virginia, later moving to various parts of Kentucky, Illinois, Arkansas and
Missouri as land opened up in these areas. James Washington Chapman was
one of the earliest settlers in Sangamon Co., IL, and other family members
had migrated to that area by 1845. Unfortunately, I don't have any
indication of a New York connection with any member of this family, and I
have found no Wm. Arthur Chapman in my research thus far. I'll let you
know if I turn something up.
