[CHAPMAN-L] Chapman family of NY
by matthew & amy carlisle
For the last few months I've been looking for info on my husbands
grandmother, Rita Chapman, but ended up with nothing but dead ends. In the
social security death index I found a woman that "might" have been her, so I
crossed my fingers and forked out the $27 for the copy of the
application...and I'm happy I did. It was the correct Rita Chapman after
all. SO...this is now the new update of the family I'm looking for...
Born as Rita (or some spelling of "Margarita") Emily Chapman
B. Dec.2, 1888 (or 1890 as in her application) in Fort Edward, NY
daughter of Frederick Chapman (I have his middle name but can't make out
what it says), and Lillian Francis Gage
She married Arol P. Carlisle (from Maine) sometime in the 1920's or early
1930's.
She had 2 children, John Albert Carlisle (b.15 Feb 1933) and a little girl
born about 1935 that died as a small child.
Rita died April 1977 in a nursing home in Mt. Vernon, New York.
ALSO...I know she had a niece named Helen Chapman-Smith that was one of the
first woman officers of the Brooklyn Bank back in the 1950's or 60's.
At the time she applied for her SS card, she was 46 years old. The
application is dated Dec.5, 1936, just 5 months after the death of her
husband. Around that same time she was attending church at "Our Lady of
Refuge Catholic Church in the Bronx.
If anyone has any info on this Chapman family, or if anyone has any good
ideas of how to start my search, please let me know.
Thanks so much.
Amy
