Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

Just wait until everyone else wanders away, and leaves you holding the bag.
My Homeowners association did that to me, left me holding nearly $3,000 of
teh community funds. and no one to advise me on how to spend it, just thise
that say "do what is needed." Well a year later there is $400 left, but a New
$2,000 ice machine in he community clubhouse.

Welllllll
I had asked that ALL responses be directed to me privately.
I had received a *differently* worded e-mail from this
person.....(recognize the address)
but there was no signature.
Anyway, I will put in my two cents worth, and hopefully it won't mushroom
from that......
The mail from the Chapman-L is NOT......repeat....NOT from the message
boards. Never has been. The message boards are an entirely different and
separate set up. I manage both the list and the message boards. The ONLY
way to access the message boards is to either through the online url, or to
subscribe to the boards themselves, thereby having the messages from the
boards sent directly to you......OR......as I have asked for a canvas of
opinion sent to me PRIVATELY.....the only other way is to have the board
posts gatewayed thru the list. The would be received by all who are
subscribed to the list.
That said......I have this to say. I've received several responses, but
won't give the majority vote until I feel that the majority of the
subscribers have responded. Folks, if you want to be heard, send it to ME
privately.
Now........I don't believe for a minute that people are asking for more
mail because they are board. I myself, with 8 lists, and 4 County lists,
plus a website for an Iowa county, and also being a committee for the
IAGenWeb Meeting that meets on Tuesday nights, I definitely am NOT
bored.........however, I DO have the board messages sent to me because it
saves me time in having to go to the boards themselves through the online
url to read and check them.
Jeff is correct in stating the both the boards AND the list is for
exchanging information. What else is the subscribing for, but to hopefully
receive information on those that we are researching. Sure, there's lots
of stuff that isn't or doesn't pertain to our lines, but they DO pertain to
others, and they have the same right as any of us to receive
also. Otherwise no one would gain any headway at all, and the lists would
be for all practical purposes dead before long. I agree with Jeff, that if
the single mailings are too much, for goodness sake, whoever it is, switch
to the digest. It comes in a scheduled daily rate, ONCE a day unless the
list flow has increased considerably, and all posts are contained in this
single mailing.
Refraining from posting on either the boards OR the list isn't going to
help anyone. I've already been told that because I've directed the posts
to come to the list rather than the individual, people have gained
information that they otherwise wouldn't have been privy to. Which adds to
the point.......not posting to the list will not only possibly leave you,
the reader, out of the loop, but also the person posting. Because they
wouldn't know either that there is someone else that is researching the
same lines. You know, sometimes a lesson in researching can also be learned
just by observing what another is doing! I've had that happen to myself!!!
Jeff, my toes are fine. It is my list, but what you have stated is
true........as another list admin and county coordinator, you know the
process. The only problem is that you got up earlier! <g>

I am sure others would agree that the list is for the exchange of
information, and that the Digest option may be better for you, since it is
less frequently in your mail.
If the Digest is still too much, you can always review and search the
archives.
Suggesting that people NOT post is a bit too much to ask, I think. After all
that is why they join these lists to post reply and see what others have
found.
I hope you find a happy level that meets your needs, and keeps your
interest.

Please do not do anything that would increase the volume of e-mail I now
receive from the Chapman message board.
If people are hungry for more, they can visit other places. Please don't
flood out the rest of us with more e-mail than we want, just because other
people are bored.

Noni, if you are still getting the board messages, you have subscribed to
them via the board. Just go there and unsubscribe. The gatewayed messages
can ONLY be received through a mailing list by subscription TO that mailing
list.

Hi Mari & Gang,
I would like to know how the rest of you feel, for the
volume of my email got so bad, getting 2 emails of the same,
via the gateway, that I "unsubscribed " on four of my Rootsweb
lines, as I still get the messages via the gateway. It helped
somewhat.

OK, here we go with a line I very seldom see. It comes down through Richard Chapman b. 1742 in Va. He was married to Susannah Connely. Then down through Thomas Chapman who I believe was his first son.Thomas was married twice. One was Mary Farley. To Thomas and Mary was born Jim Burl Chapman in Pike Co. Ky. in1842. Jim Burl married Martha Evans and they lived in Mingo. Co. W. Va.
Does any one else in this group have a connection to this family??

Here's hoping there someone new on the list that can help out with this
problem I'm having. I need the names of the parents of Elizabeth "Betsy Ann"
Chapman Saunders/Sanders. She was listed on the 1850 Covington Co Al census
with husband, Richard Sanders, and family. I understand they were married in
Dale Co Al. and I think she was born somewhere around 1825, I don't have my
notes with me right now so I"m doing this from a "shot" memory. Thanks for
any help. shandi

Ok.........I'll answer all with one fell swoop! :) Sorry for the delay,
but had eye appointments today....saw two doctors, and was a long day, and
gone for most of it. Am just now getting the email checked.
First of all, Dorothy I checked the subscriber list, and you ARE still
subscribed. Jim, Noni, and Jack were right.....the list has been very
slow. It usually does slow down in the summer. People are outside doing
yardwork/gardening, and the computer takes a second seat.
Claudia, if you are subscribed to the list.......and in just checking, the
subscriber list on the server confirms that you ARE yet subscribed, you
will receive all messages sent to the list. No one is receiving anything
anyone else isn't. All subscribers are treated the same. :)
Karen, yes, it is possible to gateway the board messages to the
Chapman-L. However, think about that.........the Chapman-L has well over
350 subscribers. If I gateway the board messages to the list, it will
increase the volume of posts. Personally, I like having the board messages
gatewayed........it lets me read them w/o having to go to the boards
themselves. But, I have had on occasion people quit the Chapman-L because
of the volume of regular mail!
If I hear a yes from enough people, we can try it. But otherwise, I'd
rather keep things like they are. I have other lists gatewayed.......but
they aren't as large in subscriber count, nor as busy as the Chapman-L is.
So.....I somewhat throw the question back to all of you. If you want to
try it, let me know privately. Let's keep it off the list.....and if I get
enough responses to go ahead, I'll set it up.
Thanks to all!
You're a great bunch!!

Yes, I agree. Several of the other mailing lists I belong to post the
messages from the message boards to the mailing lists.
Mari, is there a way we can incorporate that into the Chapman list?
Karen
Thanks

Hey Dorothy,
Everybody is on a break.....It is still working.....just hang in
there. Pretty soon they will start and your mail box will be flooded and you
can't seem to keep up.

list has been slow for a while.
