CHAPMAN Family in Dunlap,
Harrison Co, Iowa
DeWitt NASH moved to Deloit, Crawford, Iowa in the spring of 1868. They moved to
Harrison County Iowa before 1870. By 1880, DeWitt had returned to Crawford
County, Iowa and did not return to Harrison County until 1900. While in
Bloomingdale, Illinois, on December 25, 1867, DeWitt married Mary DeEtt CHAPMAN,
daughter of Thomas and Mary Elizabeth ROGERS CHAPMAN from Sheridan, Chautauqua
County, New York. Her father is buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Dunlap, Iowa.
Mrs. Nashs parents, Thomas and Mary Elizabeth ROGERS CHAPMAN, had six children:
Thomas Edward (known as Edward), Mary DeEtt, Lorett Elfreda, Albert Samuel,
Martha E., and Effie Ann. Thomas Edward was born New York; the rest of the
children were born in Bloomingdale, Du Page County, Illinois. By 1880, all of
Marys surviving siblings were living in Iowa.
Edward CHAPMAN (1840 - 1864) was born in New York. On September 2, 1862, Edward
enlisted in Company D, 105th Regiment of the Illinois Infantry Volunteers in
Bloomingdale, Illinois. According to the Muster and Descriptive Roll, Edward was
a 23 year-old, single farmer, six feet tall with blue eyes, blonde hair, and a
light complexion. Edward CHAPMAN was killed in action on May 29th, 1864 in
Dallas, Georgia.
Lorett Elfreda CHAPMAN (1850 - 1924) married Richard James BURWELL (1833 - 1904)
in 1868, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. In 1880, they lived in Crawford
County, Iowa. Known children of Richard James and Lorett Elfreda BURWELL were
Ada Ella, John DeWitt, Albert Wesley, Clarence Richard, Hubert Raymond, Frank
Harold and Nettie. Richard and Lorett BURWELL were buried at Pleasant Hill
Cemetery in Dunlap, Iowa. Richard died in 1904 and Lorett died twenty years
later.
Albert Samuel CHAPMAN (1853 - 1933) married Martha Elen SAMPLE (1858 - 1927),
daughter of Elon and Mariah ELEXANDER SAMPLE, in 1877 in Dunlap, Harrison County,
Iowa. Around 1902, they moved to Carroll County, Iowa where they raised twelve
children who were all born in Dunlap, Iowa: Floy Jane, Henry Edward (Hank),
Thomas Ealon, Leonard Elmer, Claudo Vern (Barnie), Amy Elizabeth, Rollan Adophues
(Spike), Mary Elen (May), Albert Elsworth (Bert), Effie Myrtle, Leslie Raymond,
and Bessie Edith. Although the children moved as far away as California, most of
them are buried near their parents at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Dunlap, Iowa.
Martha E. CHAPMAN (1854 - 1924) married Joseph NELSON (1845 - 1919) and they
lived in Dunlap, Iowa in 1880 along with their children -- Edwin, George, and
Sarah. Joseph and Martha are buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Dunlap, Iowa.
Effie Ann CHAPMAN (born in 1860) married Frank SCHLENSIG (1857 - 1905) in 1880 in
Boyer, Crawford County, Iowa. Frank was born in Wisconsin and was the son of
William and Elizabeth SCHLENSIG, who were both born in Germany. Frank and his
parents are buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Dunlap, Iowa. Frank and Effie
SCHLENSIG's children were Irvin F., Eva Helen, Ima E. (died young), and Paul.
About 1920, Effie SCHLENSIG moved to Texas with her son Irvin and his family.
Effies second husband was W. H. Van Slike.
Thomas CHAPMAN and his son-in-law, DeWitt NASH, both served in Company D, Eighth
Illinois Cavalry. According to the Muster Roll, at the time of his enlistment
Thomas CHAPMAN was 45 years old and was 6 feet, 1-½ inches tall. He had gray
hair, blue eyes, and a light complexion. He listed his occupation as a farmer.
Mr. CHAPMAN was discharged in February 1862 from disabilities approximately three
months after he mustered into service. The Muster and Descriptive Roll indicated
that DeWitt NASH was a farmer. DeWitt was 5 feet, 5 inches tall with blue eyes
and light hair and complexion. Mr. NASH was injured in battle at Stephens
Mills near Culpepper, Virginia on October 11, 1863. DeWitt continued his
enlistment and mustered out in Chicago, Illinois on September 28, 1864. He
received a partial disability in 1864 as a result of his gunshot wounds.
DeWitt (1840 - 1911) and Mary DeEtt (1846 - 1925) NASH had nine children who
included: Elmer D., Jessie, May Idella, Elnora DeWitt, Effie Leona, Walter D.,
and Herman NASH. Mr. NASH died in 1911 and his widow, Mary CHAPMAN NASH, moved
in with Effie and Gus LANDIS, her daughter and son-in-law. Mrs. NASH was a
charter member of the Dunlap circuit of the Free Methodist Church. Mary died in
1925, one month before her 79th birthday. Mary and DeWitt NASH are buried at
Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Dunlap, Iowa.
NOTE: There are other CHAPMAN families in Harrison County, Iowa but they are
not related. Seeking other related researchers.

KY Explorer, Vol 17, #6, Nov 2002, abstract of a 5 page article:
Ray Chapman, born 15 Jan 1891 in McHenry, Ohio Co., KY, son of Everett and
Barbara (Johnson) Chapman, grandson of Ellis and Martha (Smith) Chapman,
descendant of Willis Chapman (in SC during Revolutionary War). In 1901 the
family moved to Herrin, IL. Ray joined a semi-pro baseball team in 1909. By
1912 he was playing for the Cleveland Indians. His lifetime batting average
was .278 (.300 in his best years). He was one of the most popular players in
all major league baseball. On 16 Aug 1920 the team was playing New York at
the old Polo Grounds stadium. Carl Mays pitched a ball in the 5th inning
that struck Ray in the head. He died the next day.
I'm searching for a Wilma Lee (Wylmalee) CHAPMAN as a child in the 1910
census. She is the daughter of John CHAPMAN and Maggie (Margaret) WARD.
She would have been about 4. Her marriage certificate says she was born in
Fayette county WV but her application for a Social Security card says she
was born in Huntington, WV (that's Cabell county).
I've been searching both counties and haven't found her yet. I've got 6
enumeration districts left in Fayette county. If anyone's found her, or
knows who she is, I'd love to talk with you. In 1928 she married Clyde
Delbert CASTO in Columbus, Ohio. I believe this is her 2nd marriage.
Anyway, I wanted to share what I have found and hope it helps someone else.
Please note that I'm pretty new to this and so I'm not very good at
deciphering poor handwriting. I also didn't write down *everything* about
these people. If you need more info, please check the records directly.
Most listings are head of house, wife, then children. Their age is listed
behind their first name in parenthesis.

This Napoleon Chapman was born in 1860, probably in Kentucky. He died June
22, 1943 in Boyd County, KY. He married Ida Belle Porter (b. 1875).

Greetings!
I'm new to genealogy and I'm working on both my own family (Dodge) and my husband's family (Chapman). My husband's dad did some preliminary research and has one line going back to John Chapman/Sallie Abbott from two sides. The Lucretia Chapman/William McClure angle checks out. But we have a Napoleon Bonaparte Chapman (m. Ida Belle Porter) as a descendant of Elijah Chapman/Mary Ann McClure. My information shows Elijah as the son of Archibald Chapman/Elizabeth Mills. But I can find nothing to confirm that Archibald and Elizabeth had a son named Elijah. Or perhaps Napoleon Bonaparte Chapman is someone's else's son.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Aina Dodge
Hi everyone,
I just got back from a funeral for my grand aunt, Helen Irene Chapman Fink, and was surprised to see how many of my Chapmans still live in the South East corner of Kansas. Is anyone else on the list related to or researching this cluster of Chapmans?
The furthest back we've been able to trace the line is to 1861 Mississippi when Andrew Joseph Chapman was born. Andrew Joseph moved around a bit, but eventually married (to Amanda Louisa McHenry) and then settled in South Eastern Kansas where they had 12 children. I am descended from their oldest son, Harry Gene Chapman (1890-1949), through Raymond Louis Chapman (1916-1987), through Gary Ray Chapman (1946- ) to me, Corey Ray Chapman (1976- ).
If anyone else is associated with Chapmans in the South East Corner of Kansas or has any ties to Mississippi Chapmans circa 1860, I'd love to hear from you.
Warmest Wishes,
Corey Chapman

Hello all, I am new to this list and am hoping I can share the Chapman
lines I have been researching. I have been wondering if anyone has any
information about Steadman Chapman, Sr. from Luzerne Co., PA? I am
searching for information on him, his wife, and his parents. I have
scant info on his children. I am a descendant of his son Steadman
Chapman, Jr., so I do have information on this line. I would love to
find information on the rest of the children as well as Steadman Sr.
himself. Any direction to look for information is greatly appreciated.
I have posted what family information I have to my website on Family
