[CHAPMAN-L] Robert/Ann
by JAMES & LORETTA (MOON) FORRESTER
According to Chapman Chatter number 5, pages 7 & 9, Robert embarked from Hull, which was one of the shipping ports, he was a native of Kent. (Remember I am typing what is in CC publication). It was the full belief of Rev. F.W. Chapman, that Robert was a native of Yorkshires, and that his father's name was either John or Robert, and most likely the latter. In a note on her family group sheet for Robert, Beverly Dimmick shows that Robert's father was a soap boiler by trade in Hull, England. She does not mention his name, nor show her source. It is a singular fact, that while the name Chapman occurs in the records for several centuries back, in different shires and counties of England; the Christian name of Robert has been found only in Yorkshire. It occurs, frequently, as a prevailing family name in that shire, which goes very far to confirm the family tradition, that Robert Chapman, who came to Boston in 1635, and to SayBrook, the succeeding spring, came from Hull in Yorksh!
ire.
Robert's parents were Puritans. (At this point I am not going to type all rest of info in this CC publication.) But his mother called him "Robin" and encouraged him and his sisters to emigrate in hopes that their father would want to follow. One sister married William Bushnell, and per this article there is an ancient document in the Bushnell family, in SayBrook. Another sister married a gentleman who removed with her to the West Indies, and the third died unmarried.
Robert married Amm Bliss?Blith April 29 1642. Ann the eldest child of Thomas Bliss,Jr and Margaret Lawrence, was born 1614 in Belstone, Devonshire, England. She came to America with her parents when about twenty years of age. She died November 20 1685 at SayBrook, New London County, Connecticut. Most of this information on Ann Bliss came from several pages of an unidentified book sent by Beverly Chapman. It provides a little information on the background of the Bliss family, and it gives information on Ann's father and mother. Similar information was sent by Carol Dean.
All above from Chapman Chatter, with a lot more about this family. Just maybe will help someone. Loretta Moon Forrester
