Nancy,
It's probably because if I recall correctly, AOL won't let you enter sub
addresses....that is addresses that are part of a sub-directory....which is
what Marsha gave you. I believe if you try entering from the main page of
the site, you'll get there OK.
Start with http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~chapassn/welcome.html
Then click on Biographical Dictionary link that is in the table on the main
page.
That should work for you......

This is the site I was talking about when I mentioned the "Lost Chapmans".
It's the
Biographical Dictionary section of the CFA website. I believe there are
only three states that are online so far. New York and Ohio are two of
them, which is why I was able to find Orvis and Haines.
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~chapassn/biodict.html
Also, I didn't realize there was more than one Marsha on the list so from
now on I am going to sign my name as Mashane so there won't be so much
confusion.
Mashane (Marsha) descendant of Orvis Chapman & Electa Buck - trying to tie
Orvis' line into Haines Chapman and Jabez Chapman
Marsha,
I'm not sure what you are calling the "Lost Chapman" section of our web
site. I'll have to look again. If you send me all the data I will
eventually submit something to Mari for posting but the CFA data is being
loaded systematically in blocks of data.
I suspect the one you are referring to is on one of the related sites
linked to the CFA site. I just checked the CFA site and did a search and
could not find Crois Chapman
I don't suppose you've found a connection to the Hains Chapman whose record
we had???

Gil,
The "Crois" Chapman that I found on the 1850 census index for Erie Co., PA
was, indeed, the Orvis Chapman I have been searching for. His name had
been
transcribed incorrectly. After 25 years of searching it is a great relief
to finally locate him for this census year. Zenas Hains Chapman is listed
with the family, just as he should be.
Also, the Zenas Chapman I had found listed in 1870 in Lyons Co., Kansas was
the same Zenas - Orvis' son. He was living with his sister, Nancy Chapman
McCarty, and her husband. So I have positively identified Zenas Hains
Chapman as being the son of Orvis A. Chapman and Electa Minerva Buck. How
do I add that information to the CFA site? Orvis is listed there in the
lost Chapman section.

Marsha,
No, I don't believe Jabez is there yet. But he will be eventually.
I was talking out of my head yesterday when I said he descended from the
immigrant William. That is the way we used to have him until research done
by CFA member Phil Ellsworth proved a book published in 1854 was incorrect.
Jabez is a descendant of the immigrant Edward Chapman born about 1617 in
England. There are a few records in our data base that have not been
updated on that limb of the tree that keep getting me in trouble.
By a separate message just for you I'm sending you some data from our file
on Jabez. That should take care of things until you hear from Jean Snow.
Let me know who "Your" Chapmans are and maybe I can help prove or disprove
a connection.
Gil Alford, CFA Corresponding Secretary
Thanks Gil,
I will be looking forward to receiving the information. The newspaper
article I have was one that was found in my great-grandmother's things
after
her death. I'm trying to figure out the connection between my Chapmans and
him. Grandma wouldn't have kept it unless it was important to her.
I went to the CFA site and did a search for Jabez but didn't find anything
that matched. Is the information on there?

Hello
Looking for information on Samuel CHAPMAN born circa 1750-1760 in
Philadelphia, PA and was educated at Oxford, England.
His son Abraham Amos CHAPMAN was born 1792. Abraham Amos Chapman married
Mercy HOPKINS 1797 in Truro, MA.
In 1810 Samuel Chapman was in Truro, Barnstable, MA. and by 1830 his home was
Provincetown, MA.
Thank you very much. Any help would be appreciated.
Barbara McArthur
Gil,
The "Lost Chapman" section may be on a different site. I was thinking I
found it on the CFA site but maybe not. I definitely know I found it
through this list - just a couple of months ago. Both my Orvis and the
Haines I am trying to connect to are on it.
I will send you my information privately. At a certain point it connects
into another Chapman line that comes from all the Robert Chapmans. Two
Chapmans married each other. I won't send that data since you already have
it, I'm sure.
As far as I know, there is no such person as Crois Chapman. That's just the
way Orvis was listed on the index for the 1850 census in Pennsylvania.
No, we haven't made the connection to Haines Chapman - yet. But I am in
contact with one of his descendants and both of us feel there has to be a
connection of some kind. Several of Haines children are buried in the
Lockport Cemetery in Erie Co., PA and Orvis was the minister of a
congregation in Lockport for several years. I strongly feel that Haines is
probably an uncle to Orvis.

There are quite a few Jabez Chapmans, as I discovered while trying to find
this one. According to the newspaper article the family went to
Cooperstown, which is in Ostego county. He later ends up in Erie Co., New
York. There is a Jabez Chapman listed in Ostego Co. in 1820, 1830 & 1840
but since those census don't list the names of the children they aren't very
helpful to me. What I'm really looking for is the name of Jabez' father and
grandfather to see if they connect to Haines Chapman and Orvis Chapman.

Hi Lee,
I don't have anything positive but seems like something worth checking out.
In 1850 census there were for Chapman families in Berrien Co. None of the
families had a FRANK A.
Your best prospect looks to me like the family of Arivn 45 VT and Clarisa
38 VT. They had six children and one was named ARVIN, age 4, who might
have been Frank Arvin. If I were you I'd try to access the 1860 census to
see how he's listed. Mr. Arvin was a horticulturist. Did your Frank have
such leanings?
Another family was that of Smith 31 NH and Nancy 31 OH. They had a son
names AMOS, age 9, who might have been Frank Amos but he would be on the
older side for marriage in 1850.
Warren Chapman 38 NH and Sarah E. NH had a son AUGUSTA W, 12 and I'd say
the middle initial in this case rules him out.
Norman 34 NY and Sarah 26 OH had a 7 year old son whose name was not
legible.
.. Gil Alford, Corresponding Secretary, Chapman Family Association
I am new to this list and, like everyone else, looking for help.
My husband is descended from a Frank A. CHAPMAN who married Orell S.
SUTTON 20 Nov 1870 in Berrien, MI. Their children were Charles B. (b
1872), Arthur Frank (b. 1874) and Chester Calvin (b. 1876). Chester and
Arthur married sisters, Ida and Barbara DOWNING. Arthur raised his
family in South Bend, Indiana. Chester and Barbara, along with Frank
and Orell went to Canada in the 1920's. Chester and Barbara had a son,
Floyd Gray CHAPMAN who married Gertrude BEHRENDS in Chicago, Illinois in
1920.
I have no more information on Frank but some on his descendants -
Any help would be wonderful -
Marsha,
Jabez is pretty well know, a descendant of the immigrant William Chapman.
Jean Chapman Snow a member of this list and the Chapman Family Association
is probably more knowledgable on him than anyone else. At this time she is
visiting a daughter in Atlanta and I don't know if she will be picking up
her mail while there.
If you don't get a response from her then I'll tell you more but I'd prefer
you hear it from Jean.

I have a newspaper article from 1895 in Erie Co., Pennsylvania. It's about
the 99th birthday of a man named Jabez CHAPMAN. He was born 9 Oct 1796 in
Lancaster, New London, Connecticut. At age 3 his family moved to
Cooperstown, NY. The article says his grandfather went with them. Both
his
father and grandfather were blacksmiths and Jabez became one too. The
grandfather served in the War of 1812. Jabez eventually ends up in Erie
Co., PA. No other names besides his are mentioned in the article. When
the
family moved to New York his mother had a baby that she carried in her
arms.
Does anybody know who this Jabez is or anything about his family?
