I have Chapman's in the Christian Co., KY area, but they are from a later
and possibly different bunch all together. My Chapman's I know for a fact
were in Henry Co., TN in 1860. Here are the names of my Chapman's and you
can see if any of the names look familar.

I recently had an opportunity to review the Centennial Edition of "The Daily Pilot", Plymouth, IN, August 1936
The following listings were under "Weddings in County Prior to 1850"
Chapman, Clark and Bittiah Barnhill - Oct 2, 1847
Chapman, Clinton and Mary Knapp - Mar 5, 1847
Chapman, Courtland and Emily Beltly - Aug 23, 1849
Chapman, Orlitta to John H. Armstrong - Apr 27, 1848
Hope this helps someone.
Hello,
Have early Chapmans who lived in Christian County, KY in late 1700's-early
1800's. A GGG Grandmother, Nancy Chapman, married William French, and they
moved to Independence/Izard Counties, Arkansas when it was still Arkansas
Territory in early 1800's.
Believe Nancy is daughter of Giles Chapman of Newberry, SC. William came
from Spartanburg, SC, do not know whether they married in SC or KY. Both
had fathers who served in Revolutionary War. Their daughter, Frances, born
1800, was my GG Grandmother. Apparently William died fairly young, last
trace of Nancy was in 1850 census in Izard County, where she is listed as
living with son or grandson. Anyone familiar with this line?
Best regards,
Grace Baxter Constantine

Corey,
Sorry that it has taken so long for me to respond. With four kids under the
age of 10, I more often than not feel like a "chicken running about with my
head cut off" so to speak. LOL! Quick question first......were your
Chapman's in Montgomery Co., TN as well?
Anyway, here is what I have. Its sketchy at best for the earliest
generation. The information I have comes from census records. I literally
got lucky by finding the family in the 1860 census for Henry Co, TN. I
don't know where they were before that as they are not listed in the 1850
census. You'll notice that there is a Ruby and Marie. I believe it to be
the same person as their ages are the same. The family, minus James (the
father), are in the 1870 and 1880 census for Montgomery Co., TN. Of course
with their not being an 1890 census, I'm sort of wandering in the blind
trying to find out where all the siblings went. My James Thurston Chapman
was the youngest child and took a while to settle down as I have each of
their children born in a different location...although all the towns are in
the Stewart Co., TN/Trigg Co., KY/Christian Co., KY area (they
geographically border each other). The family settled in Herndon,
Christian, KY until the old farm was broken up/sold in the 1950's/60's.
However, my great grandfather, DeWitt Edward Chapman, bought another farm in
Christian Co. and my great grandmother lived there until the 1980's, but the
farm is still in the family today on the Chapman side.
Unfortunately, I have very few resources for the Montgomery Co., TN area. I
feel that the Chapman's there later on ARE somehow related to mine but I
just can't make the connection right now. What I need to do is try and get
a copy of the 1910 and 1920 census for Montgomery Co., TN and see the names
of the heads of households to see if they "jive" with siblings from my
group.....
Here is the information on the descendants I have. And, as far as I know
it, these are all the children of this marriage. But, I do feel that my
Chapman group must have somehow been related to another group of Chapman's
that may have been through the area earlier, or were in the area that I
haven't found yet. And I haven't a clue how he died/where he went regarding
my James Chapman (the elder).
An interesting aside to this is that I have found a John Chapman who was
born in 1823 in TN/VA and who died in Lincoln Co., TN who had at least three
children that were named the same names as the children of my James Chapman.
[John Chapman (b. 1823) m. Elizabeth A. Graves (daughter of Jacob Graves) on
12 Feb 1851. Their children were: Andrew Jackson Chapman (b. 1855),
Benjamin Franklin Chapman (b. 10 Apr 1853 in Coffee Co., TN/d. 22 Dec 1914
in Winchester, Franklin, TN; married to Delila Anneisible Spann), and James
Chapman who is listed as being born in 1875 in TN. The parents of John are
reportedly Andrew and Julia Chapman.] John Chapman could be a brother to my
James, sharing family names etc. I would be more excited about this is the
names "Andrew Jackson" and "Benjamin Franklin" were so common.
Also, you mention that you had a Joseph Chapman that just up and disappeared
in the 1870's. Well, one of the brothers of my James Thurston Chapman is
supposed to have disappeared and never been heard from again, but I don't
know which brother and haven't been able to eliminate any of them with
census records.

I am forwarding part of an article from Indiana County, PA that refers to a Jos. Chapman:
BLAIRSVILLE, PA., Feb. 1st, 1875.
ADAM SHURICK has renovated his mill generally, and is now prepared to do
all work in his line promptly and entirely satisfactory to his customers.
The talk now is that the Marker House of this place will be opened next
spring by MR. BAKER and lady. This will be good news to the people, and will
liven things up up [sic] at the corner. We understand that the house is to
be generally renovated inside, painted, etc. MR. BAKER will make a popular
and efficient landlord, and his wife as good a landlady.
We saw a painting recently in the possession of J.R. WHERLE, that was
executed by our art-ist, JOS. R. CHAPMAN. The painting represen-ted the
death of Red Jacket, and the design is ad-mirably executed. The Indian chief
has climbed down the side of a mighty precipice and holding on to a bush
growing out at its side. The pur-suing soldiers are seen at the top, looking
down on the object of their hot pursuit. MR. CHAP-MAN is now at work on
another painting, life size, same as this one.
To Carole and the list:
I am researching Chapman and Decamp. Here are my people:
Jacob Chapman born about 1816 probably in Wheeling WV (then Virginia) died
about 1894 in Plymouth, Hancock, Illinois. Married Melissa Jane Decamp on 27
July 1841 in Illinois. She was born 12 Sept 1824 in Pennsylvania. She died
about 1896 in Illinois. Their children were:
Nancy Ann b.1842 William J b.1845 John H b.1848 Eli Gavin b.1849
Martha Matilda b.1851 M Ellen b.1853 Joanna b.May 1860 Winchester
Lewis b.1863 Charles b.1867 all in Illinois
Jacob had a brother: Hugh Chapman born about 1813 in Wheeling, WV who
married Julia A Wright on 1 Jan 1841 in Illinois.
Melissa Jane was the daughter of Pemetia and Joel D Camp. She had a brother
named Gavin. Joel was born about 1797 probably in Pennsylvania and died 9
July 1848 in Illinois. Pemetia died before February 1829 in Ohio. He had a
second marriage to Matilda Bridge. The children of the second marriage were:
John Hughes 1828, Ann Worley 1828, David C 1830, Sarah K 1832, Jeremiah
1833, Deborah/Rebecca 1835, Mary E 1837, Elizabeth 1839, Joel 1841, Martha
Matilda 1843, Barton S 1846 all in Illinois except Deborah & Mary E might
have been in Wisconsin.
I hope we can make a connection.

mustache and long beard, born 1860, died 1926 in Wilberton, Latimer, OK.
7th child: John Henry Chapman, slender, balding with dark mustache, born
1872, died 1942 in Red Oak, Latimer, OK.
8th child: Lewis Edwin Chapman, stocky, full head of medium color hair
and mustache, born 1874, died 1929 in Collin County, TX.
5th child: Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie" Chapman Fortenberry, born 1867, died
abt 1939 in Irondale, Jefferson, AL.
6th child: Nancy Hill "Nannie" Chapman Bonner, born 1869, died 1947.
9th child: Malita Caroline Chapman Vann, born 1877, died 1944 in
Trussville, Jefferson, AL. [my maternal grandmother]
10th child: Harriet Eleanor Chapman Cates, born 1880, died 1959 in

Looking for information on Lucius Levi Chapman born in Sandusky,Oh in
September 1815 and moved to Crawford County, AR, Van Buren. Most of his adult
life, he was called Levi Chapman. He was enumerated in 1850 as Lucius L.
Chapan.
He was a steamboat captain in Van Buren and also ran a hotel.
My great great grandfather named one of his sons Lucius Chapman Alverson and
his daughter named one of her sons Levi Chapman Holeman. I beleive there is a
connection to my Alverson family but can't make the connection at this time.
Any ideas?
How do I get on that WEB? Thanks.Clyde
