Hello,
Finally found my Chapman family sheets --this is a fast summary of the info I
have on the James Chapman that was in Jackson Co. OHIO and later moved to Ross

Heads
up if you are researching those areas for Chapmans.
There is much to do here yet and I would think propably a daughter has the
family Bible and not knowing for sure which daughter is the oldest is hard to
guess which one might have it. Susan/ and Sarah Jane died early so they

Could this be the mother?? Sarah is a name that is carried in all the

Chapman people,
I heard this weekend that there is a Melungeon surname lists and Chapman
and Coffey (my other search) are on it. This is out of Ky and Tennessee
and is a mixed group of immigrants. Any info will help.

THANKS for catching that! YOU ARE CORRECT! It is not know from where
William came. I even knew that but drew a blank for some reason. I had
taken a quick look at my data base and have an old note from someone
else (not documented) that said he was born there, BUT should have been
eliminated when I got the data from the FW Chapman book.
Thanks for the correction and keeping me on my toes!

Sorry, John, but the FW Chapman book does NOT say that William of New
London was born in New London.
End of the first paragraph says "It is not known from whence William came.
He appears first on the New London records, in 1657."
Did you perhaps confuse this with another from your huge collection of
records?? Or do you have a different edition of the book? Mine is the
original printing, 1854. Jean

Yes, this is an excellent site. Especially since the documents are
actually on line and it's not just an index, like the CD from our
friends.
GA is not there as GA was an original colony and not included. The lands
included are for only those territories after we became USA, if I
remember correctly.

Looks like you are referring to William of New London, Ct. According to
the FW Chapman Book, he was not born in England, but in New London abt
1638.
the John and Daniel you list are 2 of his 7 sons by Sara Lidia
(presuming the Chapman book is correct - I have NOT verified anything
yet)
I have put the FW Chapman book into my database so can provide you with
quite a bit of information if you want.
I have been told that William's father was Alexander Chapman, born
Tasbrugh, England. His father was Dudley!
Part of my line extends from William so I am always looking to trade
info!

Hi List-Mates!
Here is the web site for you to search for land patents. Not every state is
listed but maybe the ones here will help some of you. Georgia is
inconveniently absent from this list. The Land Patents listed here are from
1820 to 1908.

Hi,
Sorry about the last Email --forgot they auto go to list--was sending it to
Gail--but No, the James Chapman was born appx 1790 and in NC so he says.
Son later said TN --so from that we are thinking the area of NC that became
TN --that's a leap but you have to start somewhere.
The William she was talking about was born in Jackson Co. Ohio in Franklin
Township from all I have found. I do not know what happened from there,
but James and family, wife Rebecca Radcliff and several children went to
Ross Co. for the 1850 census and then on to Macon Co IL for 1860 census.
William did not go to IL, Robert stayed in Ohio and married Mahala Mercer
in Scoito Co. and died there in 1919 ?? Mahala died first and he later
married Sarah Smith she out lived him. Robert went to civil war late and I
figure it was because of the death of William --again a leap--
Lorene married a Daniel Beaver and moved to Mo also. Andrew, Joseph, Susan
children of James and Rebecca moved to IL with family.
All stayed there and died there.
Now, there is another James Chapman that was born about 1760?? was a R/War
patriot and married a Phobe and had children there in Scoito County. I
can't find connection to the families at this time.
There is a gentlemen on the list that is doing that James though. George
are you out there??
Now, I think and can't prove at this time that Mrs. Sarah Chapman that
married Barry Ragsdale was the mother of James --but could be all wet too.
What is needed is a census of Berry Ragsdale in 1850 if they are still
there or a run of probate records for him.
Any help would be appreciated. Gail I will still get total info off to you
and list soon.
Again sorry to send more or less personal message to list--hope this info
helps make up for it. <G>
