Marriage of William--to Sarah Lidia per: [ p. 146. New England Marriages
Prior to 1700, Clarence Almon Torry, Genealogical Publishing Company, Inc.,
Baltimore, 1985. LDS Library, Santa Clara, CA]
Hi Diane:
You brought up something I've been thinking about lately. There is a
dreadful mess of Chapmans from BOTH lines in Lebanon and Colchester CT,
i.e. from both Wm of New London and Edward of Ipswich! I think it's going
to be rather difficult to separate them especially since in at least one
case (and no doubt more!) they intermarried.
I found that out as I was again studying my line, the Joseph from Edward of
Ipswich who m. Marcy/Mercy Wentworth, wrongly attributed by FW Chapman to
Wm of New London's line. It turns out that after Joseph died in 1725,
Marcy/Mercy turned around and on 19 Dec 1728 married Wm Chapman of
Colchester, son of John, the eldest son of Wm of New London! Yikes!
And Marcy/Mercy's sister Katherine had already m. this William's brother
Daniel of Colchester in 1713. Makes some real problems for us 20th - soon
to be 21st Century researchers. And darn, I don't have a copy of Norwich
Vital Records which I used to use at the Tacoma Library in WA. Does anyone
have a copy? I'd like to have the names of all the Wentworth clan.
Oh, dear, I think I need an infusion of leftover Thanksgiving dinner. My
brain is spinning. <VBG> Jean Chapman Snow
It may be that Marcy/Mercy's second husband William didn't want to take on
Joseph's children, because on Mar 25 1728 her son Aaron was bound out (when
Aaron was 10) as an apprentice blacksmith until 21 yrs to Ebenezer Lothrup
and his wife of Norwich. Of course, so many children were apprenticed or
bound out when mother or father (or both) died or were incapable of caring
for them.
Paul and all Chapmans,
Thank you for the lead on Ruggles family. Nancy Ruggles married William
Chapman and I am searching for them. I beleive Nancy born in Ky. and
William in Va.
Paul thanks for the lead and taking time to look it up.
Babsy
Hi, I find Stephen and Milo, but they are at the end of the information on
the descendents of Deacon Nathaniel Chapman. The book was published in 1854
and has all the information you already have. Sorry I can't be of more
help, but that's all I have.

Hi,
I am descended from Wm. and Sarah Chapman also through oldest son John. I
really don't know much about background of William. I saw something about
a Wm Chapman receiving shipment onetime and I wondered if he was first at
Barbadoes . Might be worth pursuing. I have tried to get all his children
lines down from him and sort out who was who. Which are you on? Mine
ended up in Colchester and then in Sharon.
Diane Titus
Any day you get up, is a good day.
Pat,
Can you tell me, is Stephen Brewster Chapman (married to Lavinia Gates) in
the F.W. Chapman book, then? I have found other books and information on both
S.B.'s and Lavinia's lines but they seem to stop just before getting to them.
Are any of S.B. or his siblings families mentioned, or maybe any history
surrounding them? I've heard some interesting stories concerning Milo (Philo),
that he was a deserter, and that he hid in the woods near where S.B. and Lavinia
lived. At night, Lavinia would put food out for him. Seems like there was yet
another story of him building furniture, while he was hiding, for S.B. and
Lavinia to sell for him. No idea if any of these stories are true or not, they
came from my grandmother's cousin who turned 100 last year and only went into a
care facility two years prior because of a heart attack. She's still getting
around with a walker and still fairly lucid. .....Leann

I am descended from William and Sarah Chapman of New London, Conn. He was
sexton of the church in 1691 and died Dec. 18,1699.
Can anyone supply more data on them? What was Sarah's family name? When and
where were they born? Any ancestry on them?
Any help sincerely appreciated.
Robert Medernach
I am a total novice at this, but I have heard that an Uncle was named
Brewster and was named that because of an ancestor who was one of the first
to plan to come to America because of religious persecution in Ireland or
Scotland or England. Does anyone know anything about that. My grandmom was
Mary Elizabeth Chapman Robinson and my father was born in Haralson County, GA.
Mary Robinson Paschall
Hi Chapmans,
I am looking for a William Chapman, born in Virginia, circa 1820, who married
Nancy Ruggles, born in Ky. I have here birthdate at around 1800 so her
husband may have been born nearer to 1800. Not sure.
They are the father and mother of James R. Chapman of Carter Co., Ky.
born 1842.
thanks,
Babsy
I read your post with interest as I am still trying to locate my elusive
great grandfather's ancestry. Before Harry Chapman, born in Illinois in 1860
and listed on census records as his father being born in England and his
mother in Kentucky, I have nothing. A letter from my father written in the
1960s indicated that Harry's family had come from Virginia after Richmond had
been sacked in the Civil War. He said he remembered as a small child, his
grandfather having an accent so thick you could cut it with a knife. (Of
course the letter also mentions being related to Pattersons who settled in
Peoria, IL who I have never found.) Harry Chapman married Caroline (Carrie)
Bond in Sangamon County, IL. in 1882 and they had four children; Bertrand
(known as Bernice all of my life prior to finding her name as Bertrand on a
1910 census) who was my paternal grandmother, Hallie, Earl and Edith, born
between 1883 and 1891. They were on the Chicago, Illinois census of 1900 with
Harry's occupation listed as electrician. I never met my grandmother, but I
do remember meeting Hallie as a small child. I have always hoped someone out
there would recognize the names of the four children, but my letters seem to
be the only ones concerning HARRY CHAPMAN. thanks for taking the time to read
my post.

Hope this answers your question. It had been posted earlier.

I have a small family history book in my possession that was written by N.
Maude BEVER, not dated nor copyrighted. The title is Descendants of Henry
Charles and Mary Ann Chapman 1845-1959.
To give a very brief history:
Henry Charles Chapman was born 11 Jan 1825 in Upham, Cambridgeshire,
England. He died near North English, Iowa on 29 May 1894. His wife was Mary
Ann Salmons Chapman whom he married 24 Dec 1845. She was born 5 May 1827 in
Cambridgeshire, England, and died near North English, Iowa 31 Aug 1914.
Their children were:
Charles Henry Chapman b. in England, 2 Aug 1847, died in Iowa in 1911.
Benjamin Salmon Chapman b. in England, 28 Mar 1850 and died at Edison, NE
21 Nov 1934.
Frederick Obidiah Chapman b. in Vienna, New York, 6 June 1855 and died 3
Nov 1901 in Iowa.
Alfred Sylvester Chapman b. in North English, Iowa 4 Aug 1857 and died 13
June 1943 in Wellman, Iowa.
Emma Jane Chapman b. 25 Dec 1860 near North English, Iowa and died 1 June
1946 in Lincoln, NE.
Joseph Sheridan Chapman b. 28 Mar 1865 near North English, Iowa and died
same place 30 July 1928.
If anyone is interested in this family, please let me know and I will share
what information my Aunt Maude wrote.

Hi Babs, When you mentioned the Ruggles surname it stuck out. So I looked
back through my correspondence and I found the following e-mail. I would
possibly try and get in contact with the person who sent it. I think it is
probably to much of a coincidence that Chapman's married Ruggle's about the
same time frame and not have them related.
I hope this helps. Paul Rekow
"Hi Paul, I am stuck on Mattie Chapman. This is what I know. The death
certificate of her son, Robert Ruggles b1834, identified Mattie as his
mother. (I had never heard of her before). Mattie was married to John
Ruggles b1801 d 1889. On the 1850 Lawrence County, KY census John is shown
with his second wife, Nancy Clay...so Mattie must have died between 1834 and
1850. Some old family relatives stated they
"thought" John's first wife (Mattie) was from Scioto Cty, Ohio and that John
and Mattie had lived there for awhile. I would assume that Mattie was born
abt 1805-10.
Any clue would be a miracle at this point.

Saw your post and had a giggle....seems like everywhere you look it familiar
surnames keep popping up, whether you are related to that branch or not.
I have an Uncle John and Aunt Ruth Cline that live in KY and we are all
connected to Chapman's in the Christian Co., KY area.

Much mention of the Bible telling about "a crown" we shall receive in
reference to the crown on the tombstone. Here are several crowns
mentioned (with scripture reference) for you to ponder.... Now down
everybody jump on me for quoting scripture or I might take you off my
prayer list :-)........."Preacher"
1Thes 2:19
19 For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye
in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?
(KJV)
2 Tim 4:8
8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the
Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me
only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
(KJV)
James 1:12
12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he
shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them
that love him.
(KJV)
1 Pet 5:4
4 And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of
glory that fadeth not away.
(KJV)
Rev 2:10
10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil
shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall
have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give
thee a crown of life.
(KJV)
I gave all the information that was given in the San Francisco
Chronicle.
I haven't looked at all my mail, but there must be others interested as
I see about four or more listings. I will keep their names in case you
are interested.
