I am seeking information about Almira CHAPMAN,
born 20 April 1822 in Kentucky. She married
first, William MADDEN 8 Nov 1842 in Piatt county,
Illinois. She married 2nd, Stephen HOFFHINES 23
August 1857 in Piatt county. Almira died 16 September
1885 in Jewell county, Kansas.
Does anyone know who her parents and siblings are?
Thanks!

I don't have proof positive that Lydia is Amasa's dau. Just conjecture.
1. Since his wife was Lydia, it is probable that he named one of his
children that.
2. You have a large gap between 1811 and 1818. My Lydia was born in 1815
approximately.
3. They are all buried together.
4. She married in Onondaga Co. NY, where Amasa was at the time.
5. She died before Amasa, so she would not be listed in his will. (By the
way, do you have a copy of it, I don't).
6. Hunt and Davis seem to be allied lines - more on this later if you want.
Here is what I have on Amasa and Lydia:
Amasa-5 CHAPMAN, b. 29 Jun 1771, Ashford, CT (Vital Records 3:121), son of:
-
Jacob-4 CHAPMAN, b. 7 Sep 1739, Ashford, CT (VR 1:61), d. 11 Nov 1823 ae 84,
Ashford, CT (gravestone), m. 17 Mar 1762, Ashford (VR3:121), Ellinah
[Eleanor] KENDALL. Son of:
-
John-3 CHAPMAN, b. ca. 1712-3, d. 1759-62, m. 1 Mar 1736, Ashford, CT (VR
1:61), Penelope BUGBEE. Her estate was probated 1794 in Ashford (Pomfret
Probate District, File #979). Son of:
-
John-2 CHAPMAN, b. 16 Aug 1687, Topsfield, MA, d. 23 Jan 1731/2, Ashford, CT
(VR1:9), m. (intentions 13 Apr 1712, Boxford, MA)(intentions 3 Apr 1712,
Ipswich, MA), Martha DAVIS, b. 26 Nov 1686, Amesbury, MA, d. 7 Sep 17--,
Ashford, CT (VR 1:61), daughter of John and Elizabeth (SEELEY) DAVIS. His
estate was probated in 1731, Ashford (Windham Probate District, File #759).
She m.(2) William RUSSELL. Son of:
-
William-1 CHAPMAN, b. unknown, d. unknown, m. 30 Mar 1682, Ipswich, MA,
Elizabeth SMITH. He first appears in March 1678, possibly coming from
Brookfield to Ipswich as an apprentice. He was definitely not a son of
Edward-1 CHAPMAN of Ipswich. He resided in Ipswich, Topsfield, and
Boxford, MA.

Do you have any of the early census's for Amasa? Does it show an

Hi Chapman Researchers,
I am seeking information about Maude May CHAPMAN,
born 23 January 1878 in Tama county, Iowa. She
married Arthur Duard MADDEN 26 August 1893 in
Concordia, Cloud County, Kansas. She died 26 May
1917 in Beaver Ridge, Alberta, Canada.
She may have had a sister named Lydia. Cencus records
indicate her father was born in New York and her mother
in Michigan.
I would sure love to find her parents and siblings!

To: Roy D. Chapman

Roy: I note that you have a MARGARET CHAPMAN and an ALMIRA CHAPMAN
listed as children of an AMASA CHAPMAN.
I am looking for a MARGARET ALMIRA CHAPMAN who was apparently born in
Massachusetts on 8 March 1792, married DAVID EDSALL SHEPARD and died in
Brewerton, Onondaga County, NY, on 27 February 1860. I have visited her
grave in a private Shepard Cemetery on the shores of Lake Oneida.
MARGARET ALMIRA CHAPMAN was apparently the daughter of a JOHN CHAPMAN.
There is such a coincidence in the MARGARET-ALIMRA-CHAPMAN names, that
I an wondering if there is any connection. I also note that you have
several JOHN CHAPMANs and that several of your CHAPMANs were born in
Onondaga County, NY, where my MARGARET ALMIRA CHAPMAN lived at the end
of her life.
I hope to hear from you!

Did you know that John Hunt Chapman is written up in the Jackson Co. county
histories? and also in FTM (forgot what number).
I have been researching Amasa and Lydia (Hunt) Chapman as possible parents
of the Lydia Chapman who married Simeon Thornton in Onondaga Co. They are
all buried in the Rose Hill Cemetery there.
Do you have anything on Amasa's other children?

Is anyone working on Perry Chapman's parents?
He was born in KY in 1830 and lived in Jasper County, IL. His wife was
Elizabeth who was born in IND. They had at least 4 children; James A.,
Oliver R., Alfred W., and Florence. Oliver R. married Martha Jane
Laymon in Feb 1848 and settled in Hill County, TX.
I will share all I know from here forward.
Thanks, Larry Steele

I only have the direct line from William Simonds, immigrant in 1635 to
Elizabeth Simonds, mother of Johnny Appleseed. These five generations only
mention Woburn, MA and Leominster.

I just found some more info! I'm so excited! My father had sent me some
genealogical info a few years ago & I just found it. Included was an
obituary for Mary Chapman Pitt Hendrickson, whose father was George
Chapman.
"...Mary Chapman (d. 9/24/1913), daughter of Geo.(d. 5/25/1847) and
Susan (Emory) Chapman (b.~1803) was born in Greene County, IL on April
2nd 1830 and in the same locality spent her childhood...When grown she
removed to New Madrid, MO, where in the year 1851 she was united in
marriage to Dr. Wm. Pitt. With him she resided in Missouri until his
death which occurred in the year 1871. Several years after his death in
1877 she was again united in marriage in Bolivar, MO, to David
Hendrickson, who died in 1894...was the mother of nine children, 7 sons
and 2 daughters four of whom surviv her...Wm H. Pitt of Carrollton, IL,
Prof E.C. Pitt of St. Jackson, IL, Jrs. Josie Schefer of Sawtelle, CA.
She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Martha Plott of Greene Col, IL
and Mrs. Clara Witt of Greenefield, MO"
If any of these names look familiar, I look forward from hearing from
you!
Kathy

When Lydia's husband applied for his Civil War Pension, one of the deposers
was a William Thornton, son of Simeon and Lydia (Chapman) Thornton.
Since the allied lines were so close, I thought I would ask.

I have the CHAPMAN ancestry of Johnny Appleseed and it can be found in Ohio
State Archealogical and Historical Quarterly vol 48, 1939 p 21. I believe
that I descend from Johnny's father's sister, Martha. Johnny was the son of
Nathaniel and Elizabeth (Simons) Chapman. He was born at Leominster, MA on 26
Sep 1774 and he died, unmarried, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, 18 Mar 1845. The
family was of Tewksbury before Leominster.
If anyone has discovered anything on the ancestry of Elizabeth DAVIS, the
grandmother of Johnny "Appleseed" Chapman, I would be most interested in that.

GENEALOGY PERSONAL HOME PAGES
Hi! I just added a page which is dedicated to all researchers who have a
genealogy site on the WEB plus for those looking for a certain surname. This
site lists surnames & genealogy personal home page links of those who are
providing online information for their ancestors. I am hoping this page will
let people searching for a particular surname find web pages with a matching
surname without going through multiple search engines or webrings. You don't
have to join anything or mess with passwords - just fill out a form. Right
now this page is in the beginning stages but I hope it will grow in time and
serve as a very useful genealogy resource to all that are interested. We've
got 230 links already!
I encourage you to check out my page and if interested in contributing your
information, complete my form. Then your web page address and surnames will
be added to this page after review (within a week unless I am overwhelmed).
If your web page and surnames are not on the page within a week, please email
me to find out why. All that I ask for this service is that on your page you
provide a link back to:
Genealogy Personal Home Pages. The address is:
http://members.aol.com/Indianbrav/surnames.html
Here's a direct link:

Dear Kathy,
I haven't any connection with any Chapman family member living or had
lived in Missouri. However, I did know of some ancestors that lived in
Illinois for awhile and then we lost track of there travels and place
of death and know little or nothing of their families.
I shall keep this information and perhaps someday the branches will
come to a common trunk.
Thanks for the information.
For your benefit, my grandfather was Millard (also known as Miller)
Chapman, born in Darlington, Wisconsin. His father was Alba Gilbert
Chapman. We believe that Alba was born in either Illinois or New York.
Alba's father was Wales Chapman. Wales was born in Hartford,VT. Wales
father was Joseph Chapman. We are presently working on the details of
Joseph life and that of his immediate family.
Thanks again for the help.

Hi everyone,
I am looking for any info on Daniel Chapman, d. Aug. 1900 and Kate Weisrock
Chapman, b. 1861. They were married June 9, 1886, in Chicago. I have
very little information on Daniel, other than date of death in August, 1900
and address at the time was 1722 Dewey Ct., in Chicago. In the 1900
census, Kate stated she had three living children, yet no names are
mentioned.
Any help is appreciated,
Mary
