My 2nd Great-grandmother was Jane Chapman b. 1800 in Guilford, Vermont d.
May 1855 crossing the plains in Wyoming, m. to Vardis John Fisher on 02
July 1832. Her parents were John Chapman b. Abt. 1774 m. to Mary Unknown
b. Abt. 1778.
Does anyone have any information on these people?
Thank you...

Does anyone have John Milton Chapman in their tree? Supposedly, he rode
on horseback with his brother from Santa Barbara, CA to Elgin OH. In OH
he married Hanah Eliza Coil Wright. They had one daughter, Myrtle Corella
Chapman b. 4-27-1880 d. 5-19-1958. Myrtle married Edward Hirn. John is
buried in Delphos, Allen Co., OH. It lists him in one spot as 'John
Milton' and in another as 'James Milton'. It also says "s/o James". I
have had a hard time finding anything about him. All I know are the dates
and the 'family stories' I've heard.

H! Well your Chapman names & place look as if they should fit into my
line. I start out w/ John, Samuel & Sarah. Siblings in eastern NC
c1740's. By 1790 Sarah had died leaving 2 children by her husband Kittrell
Mundin(e), John was dead & Samuel had moved to TN w/ his wife Rachel &
children. John never marrried, was a school teacher & is found on many
eastern NC land deeds. No clue has been found as to who their father was
or even if he was in this country. They did have a "cousin" named Joshua
Chapman. Samuel is named that in a will, don't know if he's litterally a
cousin, not sure exactly what this term meant in the latter 1700's.
Anyway Samuel moved to Sumner Co., TN & raised a large family. Just to
complicate things a granddaughter of his married a grandson of his sister
Sarah Chapman Mundine. Elizabeth Yourie, d/o Rispah Chapman & Patrick
Yourie, married John Chapman Mundine, s/o Charles Mundine & Ann Howard.
Charles was the s/o Kittrell & Sarah. So I'm descended from this unknown
Chapman 2 different ways! Many of the eastern NC folks came down from VA.
The Howards did & Kittrell's 3rd wife (Sarah was his 2nd) was from there.
John Chapman Mundine & Elizabeth Yourie moved to AL then TX by 1844.
Elizabeth drowned in the Galveston flood of 1900. John had died a few
years before that.
Sarah you seem to know your Chapmans pretty well. Have your run across
mine? Or have any ideas??
Thanks, Cindy

I'm looking for any ancestors of Lewis Chapman m. Rhoda O'Neall. They
were both born in SC and sometime before 1843, moved to Greene/Daviess
Co., Ind.
I have Lewis's descendants, but no ancestors. Any help will be
appreciated and I'd love to share what I have if anyone is interested.
Judy
Jean Cadel, the chairwoman of the queries page for Ellis Co., TX, where
Philip Chapman, oldest son of James CHAPMAN (Bucks Co.,PA>Prince Edward Co.,
VA>Sumner Co., TN, 1747-1800) settled was kind enough to send me copies of
some of the Chapman biographies in a history of Ellis Co.-- I found a major
in one of them. It says:
"NEWTON CHAPMAN one of the prominent farmers of Ellis county, was born in
Sumner county, Tennessee, March 1, 1818, the youngest of the three children
of Philip and Mary (Bennett) Chapman, natives of Virginia, and of Irish and
Scotch-Irish descent. The grandfather, William L. Chapman, was a weaver in
Ireland, his native country, and came to America in company with his brother
Benjamin, settling in Virginia and engaging in farming. The six children
which he brought up were: Philip, Alexander, a Cumberland Presbyterian
minister of Kentucky; Benjamin and John, farmers in Tennessee; Samuel and
James, who died just after they were grown; and William, also a farmer, who
moved to Missouri. John was a soldier in the war of 1812."
All of this is correct except for the name of the grandfather WILLIAM L.
CHAPMAN, WHICH SHOULD BE JAMES CHAPMAN! Also James was not the immigrant,
but his son-- the immigrant was Philip Chapman, a woolcomber, then son of a
merchant from London. The biography of my ancestor Alexander Chapman
(Presbyterian minister in KY mentioned above) gives a fairly complete account.
Please, if there are any Chapmans with Ellis County roots who have been
futilely searching for an immigrant ancestor named William get in touch!
There are 6 or 7 of us from various branches, looking to increase our
numbers to aid in the search for Philip!
Yours,
Sarah Shaw Tatounova

Catherine Cline, (CackyCline(a)aol.com), a descendant of Benjamin Chapman, has
done a tremendous job of researching family history. I hope to be able to
visit her and wallow in her piles of documentation sometime soon-- meantime
she's sent me an abridgement of the family information in a biography of my
great-great-great grandfather, the Rev. Alexander Chapman as follows:
"The exact time Philip Chapman reached Americea is not known, but it must
have been in the early part of the l700's, at least in the course of the
first half. He first settled in the state of New Jersey. Whilst there, he was
married; to whom the writer is not informed. He removed to Pennsylvania and
settled in Bucks Co, about 50 miles from Philadelphia. He died and was
buried in that county.
He raised a family of 2 sons and 2 or 3 daughters. The name of the eldest
was James and the youngest Benjamin. One daughter married a Mr Chaffler and
moved to Virginia, the other a Brown, and went to Ohio.
James Chapman married Martha Kirkpatrick, Benjamin a Miss Acers , when we
are not certain. James must have been married long before his younger
brother. He principally raised and educated Benjamin who was quite young
when his father died. James was a soldier of some prominence in the
Revolutionary War. He was entitled to a sword from the government. The
tassel was shot from the hilt of his sword at the battle of Long Island. He
served several campaigns during the War. In l783 he moved to Prince Edward
Co, Virginia where he was called into the service again; but Mrs. Chapman
was near confinement, and Benjamin being about the age to serve his country
in arms, took his brother's place."
I'm sure Catherine has a great deal more evidence, but this seems to me to
demonstrate fairly clearly that the Benjamin Chapman married to Catherine
Akers was the son of Philip.
I've placed all of the information I have on Philip Chapman on my
'immigrants' web page:

Looking forward to hearing from any related Chapmans!

settled in Bucks Co, about 50 miles from Philadelphia.
