Hi Graham,
I can go back to Almond William Chapman --- born Gwennap in around 1806.
In 1829, in Gwennap, he married Catherine Curnow who was born around 1810 in
Gwennap.
One of their sons, Almond William (my G-grandfather) , was born in 1831 and
came out to Australia ---- how he got here is still a mystery but he was
here in 1854 but had still been in Cornwall in 1852.
The 1861 Census lists the following family members;
Almond William, Catherine, Mary (21), Nanny (19), William (16), Elizabeth
Ann (14), Eliza (12), Thomas (9). By then Almond William the younger was
already in Australia.
There is a John Chapman, a Wesleyan miner from Cornwall, whose mother was
Catherine who came to Australia in 1877 at age 37 so he could possible be
another son who was simply not at home on census night.
I have not been able to trace the elder Almond William back any further than
his birth in Gwennap in 1806.
I don't know if this is of any use to you but it's all I have.
Good luck with your research.
Regards,
Dianne Delchau

Hi there,
Writing in response to Dianne Delchau. While my Chapman
(G-grandfather) was born around 1832 in Shotts, Scotland his son (my
grandfather) married a Cornwall Knuckey in Australia early 1900s. When I
went to Gwennap (amazing place the Gwennap Pit), I noticed some Chapmans in
the graveyard and wondered about a connection, as I have no joy in finding
earlier Chapmans in Scotland

James CHAPMAN (born 1816) married Amelia DERRETT in 1835 in
Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire. They had a daughter Mary Jane bapt 1838
also born Bradford-on-Avon. The 1841 census shows what appears to them
living 263 Plough Ct, St Andrew Holburn, London.
Does anyone have any information about this family?
Many thanks
