Barry,
Hello to you in Oz. Trust you are having a mild winter.
(I have a CHRISTIAN cousin who lives in Melbourne, just saw her and her
husband last year. We had visited them in Melbourne back in 2000.)
Thanks for all the info. Lots of lookups. I have some, but not all of
this (the 1851 Census, the marriage of James and Hanna, and the Birth
Christening of James, that of Hanna, and her family from other
Christening records). Last time I looked in earnest was back in 1999.
Will take all this and look again. Perhaps I can connect with a
researcher or two still there in the UK, or perhaps there in Oz, or NZ,
or ????.

Hi Kim,
You may have most of this but perhaps some of the following may be new
to
you. The IGI microfilmed parish registers, obtainable thro' your nearest
LDS
FHC, may well confirm some of the below as your likely forbears.
The 1851 census says Hannah Boothroyd was born at Swinefleet, East
Riding of
Yorkshire ('ERY'), about one mile or so south of Goole. Swinefleet is on
the
River Ouse as is the port of Goole - in the 18th & 19th centuries, Goole
was
a major wool export port. Your forbears would have learned their sailing
skills on the Rivers Ouse and Humber.
The 1841 census, ref: HO107/1307/11, folio 6, page 4, enumerates James
Chapman age 24, Hannah Chapman age 27 & William Chapman age 4 months
were
living at Ouse St., Snaith, Goole, ERY - James' occupation: Shopkeeper.
James Chapman married Hannah Boothroyd on 30 Mar 1840 at Hook (one mile
NE
of Goole), ERY - IGI batch no. M018826.
James Chapman was christened on 26 Oct 1816 at Gainsborough,
Lincolnshire -
his parents Robert & Mary Chapman - IGI batch no.11063.
Robert Chapman married Mary Hodgkinson on 24 April 1814 at Gainsborough,
Lincolnshire - IGI batch no. M011061. Mary Hodgkinson was chr. on 9 Aug
1780
at Gainsborough, Lincs. - her parents were William and Ann Hodgkinson -
IGI
batch. no. C011064. William & Ann had at least 7 other children.
Approx 20 miles north east of Gainsborough, near Caistor, is the village
of
North Kelsey. A Robert Chapman was chr. on 21 April 1776 at N. Kelsey -
his
parents were Thomas and Ann Chapman - IGI batch no. C030532. Thomas &
Ann
Chapman's eldest child appears to be John Chapman, chr.on 16 Mar 1766 at
N.
Kelsey - IGI batch no. C030532. They christened at least four other
children
namely William in 1770, Phoebe in 1774, Mary in 1784 and Sarah in 1786.
A Thomas Chapman married Ann Underwood on 26 May 1764 at St. Mary's
Church,
Waddingham (five miles, as the crow flies, south west of N. Kelsey).
Lincs -
IGI batch.no. M034121. 30 miles south east of Waddingham is the town of
Horncastle, Lincs - an Ann Underwood was chr. in 1746 at Horncastle -
her
parents were John & Elizabeth Underwood - IGI batch no. P011911, Another
possibility (but less likely) is found a further 20 miles to the south
at
Boston, Lincs - Anne Underwood, chr. 30 Aug. 1745.
Hope the above may prove useful to you.
Barry Chapman.

Will,
I understand your frustration, sometimes the Lists, and some of the DNA
Groups, seem a bit insular and snobby to "outsiders" (it happens even
with families known to be related - one of my surnames is managing the
DNA results so that no one but the participants has any knowledge of the
results). But, the submitter can usually request that they be notified
of even "close" matches.
Grit your teeth, and try to maintain ties between the various DNA
studies, as there will be unexpected links - some to surnames other than
CHAPMAN.
This is true with the HILL Surname DNA study in which a cousin
participates (my grandmother was a HILL).
With the DNA results we have disproved a couple of links to other HILL
families - which is all a DNA study can actually do. A positive result
proves a family connection, but not exactly where/when.
[DNA results can be used to help confirm a suspected connection, but
other evidence is required, and the connection is still based on a
"preponderance of evidence" and lacks confirming documentation to firmly
"prove" it. We have used the results in this manner with a branch long
suspected, but for which documentary evidence has not been found.]
We also have exact DNA matches with 2 other HILL families for which we
have no data (i.e.: the connection apparently predates our earliest
known ancestor).
And, we have a 24 of 25 marker match with a different surname, not here
in the States, but in the area just outside London, England (likely a
non-paternal event, as this is euphemistically known in DNA circles).
So, expect matches between English CHAPMAN families, and CHAPMAN
families in Australia, Canada, the USA, New Zealand, etc., etc.. Also,
there will likely be some matches to other surnames, so neither location
nor surname will be restricted for DNA matches. One will match where
one does, and nothing can be done about the actions of our ancestors.
Buck up. We all connect to others in ways we do not now know - or even
suspect.
Most of all, keep working at finding our dead relatives. And along the
way, perhaps find a few "new" living cousins.

My Chapman line comes into America in 1745 with a POhilip Chapman, wool
trader, form London. He had a sister and 2 brotehrs, father also in the wool
business. That is ALL I know of the UK Chapman family.
Philip married ( unknown, porobably a Mary) in Hunterdon Co N J in 1746 .
Son James was Born in Bucks Co PA November of 1747. 2 Daughters followed
and then son Benjamin b 1765.( Benjamin's is my line. James' is Sarah Tatoun's)
James and Benjamin both moved to VA;. then both their families to TN, James
in 1799 and Ben 1820.
Most of this info is from bios of Rev Alexander Chapman, son of James.
Alexander was one fo the founders of the Cumberland Presbyterian Chruch.
We need information on Philip Chapman, his sibs and parents.

Will Chapman in the the UK says....
I'm not aware of a Chapman one-name-in-the-UK study as I've been looking
for one and also contemplating setting up a Chapman-DNA-UK group as I
haven't really been welcomed by the the Chapman-DNA group that is based
in the US.
I've got around 4500 relatives in my tree but sadly, despite my surname, I
can only trace my branch back to 1811 where I hit a big stone wall. That
branch is based in Cornwall by the way. I have another, separate,
Chapman tree
that coincidentally links into my mothers side, and they are based in
Norfolk.
Cheers
Will Chapman

Carol,
I am a member of the CFA, (semi-active) I am also interested in my roots
there in the UK. All of the CFA ancestral CHAPMAN families can trace
back to the UK, but, so far as I know, many of us have not managed to
trace our roots there.
At this time, to my knowledge, I am the only member of the CFA down from
Robert CHAPMAN and his wife Mary (both born before 1800, death dates
unknown at this time). I do know that my Great-Great Grandfather, their
son James, was born in Sep 1816 in Gainsborough.
James emigrated to the States in 1851 with his wife Hannah BOOTHROYD,
and their children (William, George, and Mary Hannah), arriving in
Racine County, Wisconsin by 1854. James died in Oct 1856 in Raymond
Town, Racine County, Wisconsin, and is buried in McPherson Cemetery. We
"found" the graves of James and Hannah back in about 1995, after my
branch of the family had lost track of all but the tradition that George
had moved from Racine County to Southern Illinois about 1870.
I would love to know more about my CHAPMAN roots there, though (due to
limited time and resources) to this point I have in my records only
James and his family in the 1851 Census. They were living in Hook,
Goole, Yorkshire, and James was listed as a Greengrocer.
My family seems to have at least some connection with sailing there in
England, as George made his living as a sailor in the Port of Racine for
at least a dozen years (likely working for his uncle William BOOTHROYD,
and also for the uncle of his wife-to-be, Richard LINN; both men were
shipmasters in the Port of Racine, and both had emigrated from England
in the 1840s), before moving south for his health (he contracted a lung
infection during his service in the War Between the States).
How can we all be of help?
How do you want the data? GEDCOM? Or, Text?
Have you tried to find if there is a "One-Name Study" of CHAPMAN there
in the UK? Perhaps this can also help.
Kim CHAPMAN

Hi list
I talked to the secretary of the Chapman Family Association and he says
they
haven't put together the lines in the UK and elsewhere. Would all of you
be
willing to send me your data in your area and we'll see what we can do.
I'm
willing to start gathering the data but would need help from someone in
the
UK. For I'm just learning all your counties and how they do things and
the
census that are on line now.

Also my line only has generations from Robert Chapman from Saybrook. I need
the research from over the pond.
Here's his response to my question.
Carol,
No, so far the CFA has not ventured in to the English Chapmans. When I
started this Chapman effort, way before we formed the CFA I took the position
that I could not handle all the U.S. Chapmans and it was no use diluting my US
effort by including the English.
I made a subtle suggestion "in the presence" of the CFA President the other
day that perhaps it is time to change that. We would really need a England
Chapman project officer. Not someone there, but someone here in the US who
would coordinate all the effort.
I got into this stuff in the early 1980's and it has been one of the most
rewarding experiences of my life. You run in to a lot of great folks - living
and dead. Good luck with your association.
