In reading a book about British East Africa I encountered the name of a
Captain CHAPMAN
owner of Moori Ben Farm near Nairobi. He had 3.000 sheep, some cattle,
pigs, and fowl
and made bricks. In 1913 he owned polo ponies and hosted safaris ... a
British gentleman but a hard worker.
It came to my attention that this man was a cousin of my grandfather who
lived in
San Francisco, CA at that time. (Richard Henry Hay CHAPMAN)
By 'googling' the name I found that a Captain P. CHAPMAN was a hero in some
WWI battles in Africa.
Does this person belong to any trees out there? I cannot find any listed
cousins to Richard who might fit the
bill, but there is a connection. Possible ancestors could be David Barclay
CHAPMAN, Daniel CHAPMAN,
Frederick CHAPMAN, Jonathan CHAPMAN, Abel CHAPMAN or William CHAPMAN.
Since he was already a "Captain" in 1913, I would assume he gained that rank
by
service in the Boer war. I hope someone on the list might have this fellow
in their ancestry. If so I'd
love to hear about him.

possibly a Wesleyan minister.
They emigrated to Hobart, Tasmania in 1822 & had known children Henry,

Happy New Year, listers. May 2006 bring you many new leads on your family tree.
I'm looking for a Thomas CHAPMAN who was born circa 1777 somewhere in Buckinghamshire, and who in the early 1800s lived in Medmenham, Buckinghamshire. He had sons Richard (b. 1817) and Thomas (b. 1823). His wife in later years was Mary of Hambleden, but their ages indicate potential prior marriages.
Thomas Chapman died 01 Jul 1849 in Medmenham, age 72, and wife Mary died 05 Jun 1852, age 75. I am descended from their son Richard, who married Sophia Meades. Eventually this branch of the Chapmans ended up in New Windsor, Berkshire.
If anyone knows this family please contact me.
All the best,
Robyn Noll
Phoenix, Arizona, USA
Happy New Year everyone
My CHAPMANs originate from Withersfield in Suffolk where
Robert CHAPMAN married Mary PIPER in 1803. They eventually
ended up in Wood Ditton, Cambs where their son George
married Elizabeth HATLEY in 1859.
George and Elizabeth had 16 children in 20 years. Among them
was my ggrandfather, Frederick who was born in 1868. He
moved to London and married Amelia LEE. My grandfather,
Frederick John CHAPMAN was born in 1888 in South Norwood.
His sister Lily was born in Kensington in 1890. Frederick
John married Annie Louise HOOK in 1915 in Kensington and my
father, Eric John CHAPMAN was born in Fulham in 1920.
Does anyone recognise this family?

OK, Brick wall Philip Chapman came from London to NJ ( USA) in 1745.
His father was in the wool bsiness. He had a sister and 2 brothers.( Names
not known)
Philip had to have been born before 1723 to be 18 or older when he
married.Of course he might have been a lot older. ( but fathered a son in 1765.)
His sister and one brother were at school in Europe when the father died.
Philip was in ireland soliciting wool business there, wand apparently none of
them came home soon enough to keep teh estate form being forfeited to teh
state. ( Inknow nothing about laws in london at the time, this is in a bio of a
grandchild of Philip's)
I do not know Philip's parents or the identity of his wife whom he married
in New Jersey in 1746. Their sons, however , are Benjamn and James.[ likely
family names]
Philip Chapman carded wool in Hunterdon Co NJ and Bucks CO PA through the
1740's and 50's and is said to have died in 1777. I have no place or specific
date of his death.
ANY help will be most appreciated!!
Catherine

My brick-wall is :
Thomas Chapman widower and a mariner, born about1800- died at sea
between 1840 and 1843.
married Nov. 6, 1826
Mary O. Smith, from Marie Joseph, born about 1801- died of Cholera.1834.
They had a child named Mary Ann Chapman born Nov. 12, 1832.
who was raised by her father until one day when he went to sea and was
never heard from again,
she then was raised by several Chapman relatives in Halifax city.
The about was confirmed by notes in the autobiography of her eldest
grandson.
I'm hoping someone might know of my Thomas Chapman who went to sea and
did not return.
Thanks
Betty
