Fall in Love With Life
By Matthew Fox
The quest for spirit and spirituality, for depth and meaning in life, calls
to me and I think to most people. This sense of the infinite is common to us
all, for it is the spirit nature that we share. The medieval mystic and
philosopher Thomas Aquinas said that every person is "capax universi,"
"capable of the universe", and that the universe is meant to "intoxicate us."
Violence and hostility toward the self and others happens when we are cut off
from the universe. Which, in fact, most people are in a consumer-driven
culture. A shopping mall does not supply us the universe when we are missing
it; nor does a bottle of booze, a shot of drugs, a compulsion to make money,
or an obsession with sexuality, as fascinating as that can be.
I ask: "Why is it that our culture comprises 5% of the world's population but
is using 64% of the world's illicit drugs?" Is it that something is missing
from deep within our souls? I will explore this. Erich Fromm names our
culture's basic malaise as "necrophilia." Love of death. Its opposite is
"biophilia," love of life. "Necrophilia increases," he warns, "when
biophilia is stunted." For me the question becomes: How do we learn
biophilia? How can we fall in love with life again? How do we teach
biophilia?
The first level of learning biophilia, or love of life, is to learn about the
cosmos that birthed us. Cosmology is necessary to teach us our place in the
universe and the wonder of our being here. It fills me with wonder to learn
that 60% of our atoms are hydrogen atoms, and that they go back 14 billion
years, being the first atoms created in the original Fireball. The rest of
our atoms go back 5.5 billion years, to a supernova explosion. We have these
and the rest of our atoms in common with all the other matter of the
universe--stars, sun, planets, and galaxies. We come from the same cloth,
the original fireball. For me, this makes a difference--to know that the
universe birthed us, and we are kin to all matter.
The bad news we may hear about human history or our family history pales in
comparison with the grace that brought us into being and with which we share
the gift of existence.
Young people need to be taught these things: That they are "capable of the
universe," that they are the gifts of the universe, that they share in the 15
billion year on-going birthing of the universe, and that they are part of a
community of being that is special and unique. How unique? Not only do we
each have our own unique DNA, but the truth is that given the universe as a
whole, matter is actually the exception within it.
There are one billion particles of light for every particle of matter in the
universe. But since matter is light,"frozen light," as physicist David Bohm
called it, it is all the more amazing that we exist incarnated and as
material beings. Far from being a problem, as Plato and Platonically-tinged
theologians have taught, flesh is our link to sacred communion and community
with other beings of all kinds.
Once we learn--or relearn--biophilia, we will become lovers again. But
something else happens as well. We also become warriors of a sort. Why is
that? Because a warrior defends what she or he cherishes. When we love the
earth, we will find ways to alter our lifestyles to defend it. And ways to
stand up to those forces that are denuding it, polluting it and killing off
its variety of diverse beauty. When we love our children, we will find ways
to pass on a planet that is healthy, not diseased, and to pass on a human
society that is just, not rapacious, generous and not greedy. All this takes
warrior energy.
There is new information revealing the phenomena of our tripart brain. We
actually have a reptilian brain, a mammalian brain and an
intellectual/creative brain. To me this seems an important discovery. We
can identify the reptilian brain at work everywhere in our culture. The
crocodile energy of those who committed atrocities in Bosnia, Kosovo, Rwanda,
and East Timor are examples of the same; we are all tempted to snap and eat
up one another. I believe that capitalism often appeals to our reptilian
brains. How then do we learn to tame the reptilian brain so that our other
brains might assert themselves? Surely meditation does that for us. I think
the Buddhist tradition as represented by teachers such as Thich Nhat Hahn,
offers teachings on awareness and mindfulness that corral and tame the
reptilian brain.
Would the Columbine killings or Kosovo massacres have happened if we had not
neglected biophilia? Cosmology? Meditation? There are ways out of human
violence but they cannot happen if we do not make an effort to explore them.
At our University of Creation Spirituality and at Naropa University in
Oakland, we teach the new cosmology, spiritual practices from all the world's
wisdom traditions, today's science, love of life, and creativity. In short,
biophilia. I believe that a non-violent revolution awaits us. It requires
the reinvention of education, worship and our work. Why not come and join us?

What is Creation Spirituality?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--
The creation spirituality movement seeks to integrate the wisdom of western
spirituality and global indigenous cultures with the emerging scientific
understanding of the universe and the passionate creativity of art. It is
the earliest tradition of the Hebrew Bible and was celebrated by the mystics
of medieval Europe. Creation spirituality provides a solid foundation and
holistic perspective from which to address the crucial issues of our times,
including the revitalization of religion and culture, the honoring of women's
wisdom, and the celebration of hope in today's youth, and the promotion of
social and ecological justice.
Creation spirituality therefore, is not a new religion, but is concerned with
renewing theologies and practices within religion and culture that promote
personal wholeness, planetary survival, and universal interdependence.
The University of Creation Spirituality And Naropa Oakland
Founded in January 1996, The University of Creation Spirituality (UCS)
enfolds the 19-year tradition of the Institute in Culture and Creation
Spirituality (ICCS) into a new model of learning for the 21st Century.
Matthew Fox originally founded ICCS in 1977 at Mundelein College in Chicago,
IL. Hailed as being on the cutting edge of both education and spirituality,
the ICCS program was designed to bring the artist, the mystic, and the
prophet out of every student through courses which tap into both the rational
and the intuitive dimensions of the human psyche. This uniquely integrative
model of education has been recognized by peers in America and Europe as
being a new way to do education and theology - a way that leads to compassion
and service. In 1983, ICCS moved to Holy Names College in Oakland,
California, and then in 1996 from the plush hills surrounding Holy Names into
the urban core of this diverse city, birthing Oakland/s new University of
Creation Spirituality.
The University of Creation Spirituality offers an unprecedented Doctor of
Ministry program in spirituality, and unlike traditional D. Min. programs,
the UCS doctorate is open to people of all professions who are eager to
reinvent the workplace and contribute tot deep societal transformation.
Designed in week-long intensives, the D.Min. program can be completed in
three to five years.
In 1999, the Naropa Institute of Boulder, Colorado, and the University of
Creation Spirituality co-created an educational and spiritual alliance and
community. The outcome of this union is the Naropa Institute Oakland Campus,
offering and innovative Master of Liberal Arts program. This program is
designed for both weekend as well as full-time study, offering a unique
curriculum in mysticism, art and social change, ecopsychology, and deep
ecumenism.
Naropa Oakland, and UCS feature a unique gathering of teachers from the
world's wisdom traditions, science, the arts, technoculture, business and
indigenous spiritualities.
