Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I was previously signed up to this list as staroamer(a)webtv.net - but,
have changed my e-mail address to my_ancestry(a)webtv.net - effective
immediately.
Thank you,
Bill Chapman
Thank You Mari,
I you meant it should be in the Inbox Pane along with the "From", "Subject",
"Received" coulumns.
If that is the way then, in case someone else asks the question, a quicker
way is to right click on the message, before opening it of course, down to
properties, details tab, then click on message resource.
Brilliant. Simple when you know how. I, for one, do appreciate the help you
give to us.
Thanks for your help
Best wishes

Hello Mari
Thank you for the info' I will save it for reference.
One question, how do you see the address to check if it has not the _ in the
senders name? I use Outlook Express and in the name column it just says for
instance, Mari, John Henley, Brian Davis, etc., not an actual email address.
I am free of the virus now, thank goodness, but I was presented with this
virus last Saturday 24th. It looked like an ordinary email with no
attachment, Subject line said "Old Photos". So I opened it. The only thing
that seemed strange to me was that the body of the email was blank so I just
deleted it. Little did I know that it was big BadTrans out to get me. I
carried on reading my mail as there was loads, suddenly there was this rush
of mail mentioning the virus, after that all hell broke loose. I went and
checked my Viruscan which said I had no viruses, I had only updated my Dat
files on the 21st November. Just to be on the safe side I manually checked
for the Kdll.dll and sure enough it was there. I contacted McAfee who did
an analysis, yes.they confirmed it. Although I had updated the Dat files, I
did not realise I had to also update the "scan engine" as well. I did this
but I still could not delete it. I went to HouseCall as Elaine I believe it
was told me to, whilst that was searching up comes Viruscan box with the
only option to "delete", I did this and Bingo the blessed thing finally
gave up and died. Strange as previously I was unable to Delete, Clean, Move
or Quarantine it. So all I can think of is that it was the combination of
both Viruscan and House call being active at the same time.
Anyway getting back to my first paragraph I would appreciate a reply if you
can advise me on how to show the actual address rather than just the name
Best wishes
Sylvia from Kent, England

Subject: [CHAPMAN-UK] VIRUS WARNING: W32.Badtrans.B@mm
Below you will find the link for the Symantec site that explains the
BadTrans virus that's been hitting all the subscribers. Keep in mind,
PLEASE that this is NOT going through the Rootsweb lists. It is ONLY
hitting the subscribers because it takes it's target addresses from the
computer of those that ARE infected. It has only that connection with the
mailing lists.
Below, thanks to Jeff, I have a copy of what is on the site, but please go
there yourself......you will find basically the same thing, but I want you
to be SURE that this is for REAL!!
Please update your antivirus program, and run a scan. Anyone who is
infected I'm unsubbing until I have confirmation back that they have rid
their system of the virus. I'm sorry, but it's the best way I can deal with
it. The lists are full of these.......all of them! :( The virus uses
addresses found on the infected person's machine to send attachments to
others to infect them.......thus the reason for my move of unsubbing
people. Just trying to protect other list members.
Go to the following site and follow the directions to eliminate the virus
from your system, please.
This is the address on the Symantec site that tells about the virus and how
to get rid of it:
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.badtrans.b@mm.html
If you can't go to a sub page, (some programs like AOL won't let you) try
this address:

The particular virus is the top one listed on the page

Nope. Not with OE. It doesn't do it that way. Actually, I don't know of
a program that does show the full headers w/o performing extra steps. With
Eudora, I have to double click on the message that is highlighted.

This is NOT a joke.....it is highly important that you UPDATE your
Antivirus program and run a scan immediately!
There is a new form of Bad Trans virus, it comes with a attachment that ends
in .scr, and the return address always starts with a _ ( _johndoe(a)mymail.com)
SO you can FILTER them out by sorting out the _ in the from addresses.
CHECK YOUR mail before reading it, if there is a return address preceded by a
_ DELETE it unread.
Also, be sure if you use OE or Outlook for your email program, to shut OFF
the preview panel.
It is my understanding that people have been infected who are using this
preview panel.
Instructions for taking care (removing) the virus will follow.
This thing is running RAMPANT.....I have received FOUR in the last
hour......that were quaranteened, and several other EMPTY
messages.....which is also an indication that the sender of the message is
infected. BEWARE!! This thing is WILD!!
