Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
You can also look up the Census Returns at the GRO - if you know where the
person lived then you can (with patience!) track down their address in any
given town - the Census lists every person living in a specific house,
their age at the Census date and where they were born - this is a useful
way of tracking backwards and can produce surprise finds as to where a
person's family originated from. Census Returns were begun in the UK in
the mid 1800's.
Incidentally, I am descended from Chapmans in Bedfordshire (where records
of the village go back to Doomsday book) and London UK.
Happy hunting!

Go to the Kew Gardens where the English records are kept now that they
have been moved from the Record Office. I can't remember the street
that the Record Office was on but it was near Fleet Street. Any
tourist agent can tell you where the Kew Gardens are if you don't know
already.
I have a Chapman who came to New England from Hull, England in the
1630's but that is the opposite end from Brighton. If you would like
to see my surnames that came from Old England, check my home pages

Start with what you know. Search the GRO marriage registration indexes
for reference to the wedding of Edith Harwar and Percival Chapman ...
go forward from 1914, unless you think they married prior to that. Obtain
a copy of their marriage certificate, which will list the names of both their
fathers along with information such as the addresses, occupations,
ages and marital status of the bride and groom. If you're lucky, Percival
was in the military when he married and will have some notation of his
regiment or number which will help you trace his WWI records!
You could also search the GRO birth registration indexes c1891 for
mention of Edith HARWAR. It doesn't sound like a very common name,
so you may get lucky. However, the task would probably be easier if
you know, for sure, her father's name.
Good luck.

Ever wonder how a search engine works, or how to use one? Try this

Looking for marriage info on Charles Ernest Chapman & (first name
unknown) Champion. This may have taken place in the Plymouth area, sometime
after 1909. They had a daughter, Dorothy. There may be a birth record here
also. If anyone has access to such and can look up any details, I would
love to hear.

Please help us find information on Great uncle HERBERT CHAPMAN.,who died in BOURNEMOUTH.3 March 1953 age 77 at 62a Christchurch Rd. Bournemouth East.He was a language teacher.C.Speller was present at death of 687 Wimbourne Rd.
Herbert's parents were James and Fanny Chapman.Does any one live in the area to look up a newspaper for death announcement to see if he had any family. Was any one taught by him? What schools were near? Was he and family on an electoral role?
Grandmother is 89 and we would really love to find out if Herbert had a family. Most grateful for any help from Elza in Sydney Australia.
It is amazing to me how many folks can get thru a whole E-mail note about
genealogy WITHOUT mentioning which STATE/s or province/s are involved, LET
ALONE putting it in the SUBJECT LINE!
Pleeezzz people.

As always there is much controversy over whether it is good practice to
clean the gravestones
when wanting to photograph them, etc. One of the BlackSheep members and a
friend, who has been a funeral director for 30 years, posted this in
response to suggestions posted by another in regards to "enhancing" the
stone for a better photo.
I hope it answers some questions, and helps in the understanding of how
serious this practice really is.
