Mike,
My Chapman line is also from Frederick Co., VA. I am stuck with William who
married a Margaret. They had children born as early as 1852, so I imagine
he was born in the 1820's or 1830's. That is why I had my cousin do the 37
marker test since we haven't been able to link to anyone. Hope we find out
that we are related.

Michael, what I did was go to Family Tree DNA at their web page
<
http://www.familytreedna.com/> then to the left side of that page, click
the selection on "SURNAME PROJECTS." That will take you to the surname
page. There, click the "C" link which will take you to all the surname
studies beginning with "C." Locate our "Chapman" project and click
that
name to be taken to the page where our project is located. You will need to
fill out the form on that page. They will send you a kit and you can follow
the simple directions for swabbing your inner cheek for a DNA sample. Of
course you have to pay for the kit, which is not inexpensive (I ordered the
37-marker test). I found it helpful to read the explanatory information
provided by Family Tree DNA which answered most of the questions that I had.
You can try to go directly to the Chapman surname page by clicking this:

The DNA test itself is quite easy and painless. I found Family Tree DNA to
be very responsive and helpful.
My line runs through one of the two (or more) Thomas Chapmans in Frederick
Co., VA in the late 1700s and I am very interested in determining if the
many other Chapmans who trace their lines back to Frederick Co., VA are
related. Branches of my family moved out into Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri
and Arkansas as these areas were settled. I hope that others will be able
to use the DNA connection to tie into my Chapman lines, enabling us to share
research and compare notes about our families.

Mike, could you please repeat how to order the DNA kit? I've lost my
original email that had the instructions, and would like to look further
into doing the DNA thing.
