First thing you need is a living male CHAPMAN from your genealogical line. Any
cousin uncle grandpa whatever you've got will work.
Then go here:
http://www.familytreedna.com/description.html
You will want to ignore the 12 marker test it's useless it's so general, and go
25 or 37 marker, or best of all 59. If you need to you can for somewhere in the
$100 range upgrade later say from 37 to 59 which is very newly available. Other
groups show good match results at 37 so upgrading to 59 markers later might
help determine more closely when the match/es occurred. The group prices aren't
to be beat so far as I know.
You don't pay until after FTDNA has sent the kit, done your/his buccal swabs, &
send the kit back to them. It can take 1-2 months for results from their lab
and the results are sent to you in increments 12 25 37 59, not all at once. As
soon as you're notified "join" your results on their web page with this
Chapman
research group.
I'm sure I missed a lot. The web pages explain a lot of faqs I didn't mention.
I'm thinking you've asked in practical terms -- anyone else pitch right in!

I appreciate your copying me on the Chapman DNA project. I know nothing
about how to get the Kit, cost, etc. Could you help me out? I haven't been
able to get very far in my 4 year search. My great grandfather is John R.
Chapman born in KY 1829. I have my line from there.
Thanks,
Marvin Reed
