Tony,
Thanks for the genealogy. Do you have contact with your Chapman cousins?
Are any of them in the US? Can you tell us anything about your Chapman DNA
- haplogroup?
Not many members of the Chapman DNA Project live outside the US. I only
have contact with the British-based Genes Reunited (not really dealing with
DNA) in an effort to develop a world-wide Chapman project. Can you list or
recommend any other non-US sources for Chapman genealogy/DNA?
I'll forward your email to see if any of the Chapmans you mention are
recognized by the Chapman Family Association.
Thanks again
Dan Chapman

Hello Chappies -
I'd like to get your opinion on something.
My ancestor is John Chapman, that married Jane Donaho and
lived in Culpeper
around 1770. My kit# is 24055.
If you look at my data in the Chapman project, you will see
it next to that
of Nicholas Chapman, of Anne Arundel County, MD. The
person that registered
that line, Barbara Matson, contacted me some time ago to
suggest we might be
connected. At the time, she thought we had a 12 for 12
match. However, it
turned out to be an 11 for 12, and it falls off
exponentially at 24 and 37
markers.
Nevertheless, with the name being the same, and same
haplogroup, it seems to
me that there is an indication of connection - but perhaps
not in a straight
line.
Question - do you think it is more likely that we are
connected - or that
it's a coincidence that we have the same name?
Question - why isn't Mark Chapman and his ancestor
German Chapman not in
the project chart? I know we are of the same family, since
we share a
24-marker connection. He's among my connections on the
FTDNA personal page,
but not the project.
Are there other Chapman tests that are not in the Chapman
project?
Finally, where did everybody go that used to chat on the
Rootsweb Chapman
list? I seem to recall that Gil Alford is operating a BB
somewhere.
Anybody know? How about adding a blog to the CFA page?

Tom,
Thanks for your thoughtful email. Genealogical research
takes work - indeed the hunt is a major part of the
satisfaction while the find is just fuel for more hunting.
This remains true when we get into DNA testing. There's
quite a bit of technical stuff to learn but wills and birth
certificates require knowledge too.
I'd be glad to work with anyone willing to look at some
aspect of the Chapman project.
Now: I agree that the name and a 12/12 match is enough to
warrant serious research. Someone should give the number of
such cases in the Chapman project and request other projects
to give similar numbers. That could stimulate the major
researchers to do more studies. Some 'markers' are
more apt to not match and some families are more apt to not
match.
Apparently Mark was tested without going through the
Chapman Project webpage. He should 'join' the
Chapman project - just a click on his personal page.
Gil Alford has slowed down his activities. I'll ask
him to issue a statement about his current activity.
I'll make sure CFA considers the idea of having a blog
on the CFA website.
