Not to my knowledge, Michael. You'd think someone would--someone who is
much closer to Giles than I am. You see, even my conjecture that Giles' son
Joseph is my lineage, comes only through circumstanial evidence. My Joseph
was probably a Quaker (though his name has not been found on any of the
Quaker rolls) and Quakers, don't have tombstones and South Carolina didn't
record marriages. All that leave me me somewhat helpless in my research.
In fact, another researcher in our family claims a completely different
lineage and it comes down through Samual Chapman and his second marriage.
Samuel was Giles' oldest son. He and Joseph both lived out their long lives
in Newberry SC, and both had large families with several sons. I have
checked all the Newberry records and reached my conclusion by a process of
elimination. But, I still can't be completely sure. I, too, will leave any
real analysis of the Joseph/Catherine proposition to someone else. I
suppose it want hurt anything for both of us to claim Catherine. It is a
beautiful name--and by the way, is repeated several times in later
generations of my lineage. Thank you for replying to my query. I'd love to
meet you sometime. I'll bet you that we'd both be surprised at just how
much we are alike. Chapmans seem to have similar characteristics and
mannerisms--and someday we may learn, similar genes. Hope so. Jim

Unfortunately, I supposed that I am the one who muddied the waters,
as
both
Joseph Chapmans married a woman named Catherine. I have posted my data on
James and Jane Chapman of Frederick Co., VA (the parents of the Joseph
Chapman in my line) many times on the main CHAPMAN-L list, so I won't
repeat
that here. My DNA has been submitted to the Chapman DNA project and is
now
on line. So far as I know, there have been no Chapman surname matches for
my DNA. From time-to-time I have corresponded with researchers of the
well-researched Giles Chapman line who have pointed to strong
circumstantial
evidence that the Joseph Chapman who married Catherine Anderson was not
the
Joseph Chapman in my line. For the record, I just don't know and I could
very well be wrong. I absolutely do not want to challenge anyone's good
faith belief that the question is settled, but the DNA test might add
another bit of evidence. Has anyone been tested from the Giles Chapman
line?

I imagine you are aware of the dispute over the two Joseph Chapmans who
lived at Frederick Co Va.
