Tlhank you, Rupert for responding to my query. You are right, researchers
with much more ability than I have, have looked for Giles Chapman in England
and have tried to identify his parents with no success. But I -- an
addicted researcher of family history -- refuse to give up the search. I
guess I'll go to my grave wondering about all this. So, any effort you make
on my behalf will be greatly appreciated. Who knows, you may discover the
clue that will place the parts of the puzzle together. If provided with
such a clue, I will catch the next flight to England to finish the puzzle.
I'll keep William Singleton Chapman in mind as I continue my Chapman
research. If your branch of the family comes from the northeastern states,
where Chapmans were as thick as Smiths and Jones at the time of the
Revolution, you're gonna have a heck of of time of it. I, on the other
hand, have been lucky. My branch was Quakers and followed the Quaker
movement once in America. To my knowledge there was only one other Chapman
Quaker family ever to come to America---John Chapman family of Bucks County,
Pennsylvannia. Good luck to you and enjoy the hunt, James Chapman

Rupert Chapman is, indeed, alive and well, and living in southeast
England.
I am originally from the Hatchie Hills in northeast Mississippi, and can
trace my Chapman family back in MS to the 1840s, before which they lived
in TN
and KY. My personal brick wall is Samuel Singleton Chapman, born 1820
(apparently) in what is now Graves Co, KY (then Hickman Co). I work in
London, and
may be in a position to help with research in this country. That said,
if so
many more serious and professional researchers than myself have failed to
get behind Giles Chapman, I wouldn't wish to suggest to anyone that I
could do
any better. But I will always give it a go!
Rupert Chapman
