Hi Gary,
I wanted to comment on your 10 of 12 match. I had the great fortune of having a perfect
25 to 25 match with someone (oddly not a Chapman but to a Strange) and FTDNA said that it
could be a simple matter of genetic shift or we might have shared a common ancestor
roughly 1000 years ago. 1000 years ago is a long time so I contacted the Strange contact
and she was willing to upgrade from the 25 to the full 37 which if there are more matches
will give us a much better idea, in terms of generations as to how far back we are
connected. Point is, at least in regards to connections to different surnames (and please
don't rule them out) that it's best to upgrade to the 37 marker test. Please keep
in mind that the more makers in common the more recent the common ancestor. The people at
FTDNA are very helpful and friendly, I've called them a handful of times to ask
questions about my results and they've always been willing to explain them to me,
sometimes multiple times in differen!
t ways.
I'm sure they'd be more than happy to explain what a 10 of 12 match means within
the same surname.

Subject: New Results
I have just received the results from my 12 marker DNA test and I have verified that it is
posted on the Chapman DNA page. When comparing my markers to the other 6 Chapmans
currently posted on the website, I find that one person has 10 of the 12 markers identical
to mine and his other 2 markers are off 2 steps.
What does it tell us when 10 of the 12 markers are the same? It does not appear to me that
any 2 of the 7 people in on Chapman DNA page have all 12 markers in common. I have read a
little bit on DNA markers, but I obviously haven't begun to grasp what it tells us. I
appreciate your patience while I try to understand this DNA project.
I went to the
www.Ysearch.org and searched for the closest "Chapman" to my
markers and it was a Tom Chapman, who descended from John Chapman from VA in the late
1700's. I recall seeing that name on some Chapman List emails and I wonder if it might
be the same one.
Thanks,
Gary Chapman
