Tom,
Several people have requested my notes on James Chapman, as found in the
McCubbins Collection
in the Rowan Co., NC Library, so here goes. (McCubbins has assimilated the
geneology section of the library). This is work that was compiled by myself
and another cousin, Donna Douglas, while in NC.
I've tried to send this several times, but it doesn't go thru, so I'm
splitting it into several different messages.
Gary Chapman

Nathan SHEPPARD and wife, ELIZABETH of Chesterfield Co. South Carolina as
administers of deceased JAMES CHAPMAN are to defend a suit and charges made
by ALLEN CHAPMAN & WILLIAM ALLEN by their attorney, William Falconer, on a
complain of debt. It seems that JAMES CHAPMAN bound himself at Chatham for
L500 specie (equal to £388, 17 shillings, & 9 pence lawful money of North
Carolina) on Sept 10, 1781 but didn't pay it, nor did his executors (NATHAN
& ELIZABETH SHEPPARD who refuse.) The bond is as follows: JAMES CHAPMAN of
Culpepper Co. VA is to deed over 270 acres (probably that amount) - a part
of 640 acres - which he got from Thomas Bryant and entered with Col. James
Brandon, E. T. to Erasmus ALLEN of Amherst Co. VA - much more about it-- &
the suit started on March 11, 1794 in Chesterfield Co. S C Court.
Rowan Co Deed Book 14, page 878, #3255, abstracts of deed on page 165:
Chesterfield County, SC. Nathan SHEPARD and wife ELIZABETH are admin of
JAMES CHAPMAN and were summoned to answer ALLEN CHAPMAN and William Allen,
exrs of Erasmus Allen, dec'd who by their attorney William Felconer,
complain that JAMES CHAPMAN on 10 Sept 1781 at Chesterfield Co SC before his
death signed a bond to Erasmus Allen for £500 specie equal to L388.17.9
money of SC to be paid when requested by Allen. This was never paid by
JAMES CHAPMAN or by his estate and the debt has now passed to ALLEN CHAPMAN
and William Allen for collection. "A Copy of the Bond" states that JAMES
CHAPMAN of Culpepper Co. VA is bound to Erasmus Allen of Amherst Co VA in
the amount of £500 specie for value received; dated 10 Sept 1781,
conditioned that CHAPMAN was to deed to Allen the North 270 acres of a tract
in Rowan County purchased from Thomas Bryan and entered with Col. James
Brandon as soon as title was passed to him for the entire tract of 640
acres, otherwise the bond is to remain in effect. On 11 Mar 1794 at the
March term of Chesterfield Co Court, Nathan Shepherd and Elizabeth are
represented by their attorney, Joseph Brevard, and were found to owe debt
and damages in the amount of £390.18.9 sterling money. Alex Craig, clerk of
Chesterfield Co SC Court certified that the proceedings described are a true
copy; and Calvin Spencer and Thomas Powe, Justices of the Peace, attested to
the documents on 28 Jan 1797. Rowan Co May Session 1797, the ?deed? was
admitted and registered.
