Tom, Gary and other Virginia Chapmans,
I'm enjoying the very educational series of postings
about colonial Virginia Chapmans. With all the
research that's evident, it seems to me that DNA is
the best hope to getting answers to the questions.
That is what the Chapman project is all about. In
some cases it may also be equally helpful to find that
two Chapmans are not related (in a genalogical
timeframe). All of the occupational surnames are
expected to be a large number of unconnected families.
Now as to 10 out of 12, my reading of genealogy-dna-l
postings indicate that more data is needed. Some such
cases could reveal 23 out of 25 or even 35 out of 37
and would be a strong indication of relationship.
Also, if there were 18 our of 25 or 29 out of 35, then
we would have some (opposite) answers. There could
also be the possibility that the results of more
testing would be equally non-conclusive as the results
you already have. Then, it may take more Chapmans
getting DNA tests to get the answers.
The short answer - request more testing and all 37 is
definitely called for in these circumstances.
Dan
