Rees,
As far as I'm aware, and I may be wrong or out-of-date, Family Tree DNA
provides the opportunity to search by family group. You can opt for
searching the male descendants (Y-search) or you can trace the female line
(mitochondrial). Yes, there are limits. Family Tree DNA encourages but does
not require participants to upload basic gedcoms to indicate where the
earliest known ancestor was located and where the descendants then settled.
Other DNA research companies seem to focus on haplogroups and/or
geographical origins. I prefer trying to use Y search and mitochondrial
searches.
Good luck in your search. I hope that whatever your decision, you find the
connection that documentary searches have failed to provide so far. I'm
still hopeful that someone will be tested in the near future that will give
me and my Dad some answers to our early Chapman ancestors.
Nancy

Nancy, Lauren,
I concur, very strongly! I take great pride in my turncoat great
great grandfather, my grandfather who died of alcohol poisoning (in
defiance of all the family myths of assassination), and my
unacknowledged gay cousins. I have no need for, nor any desire for, a
family tree that has no stumps and intertwinings. I'm just making
sense of the science. . .
I'm essentially talked into participating. Which of the various
companies do you recommend?
