Subject: [CHAPMAN-DNA] how sophisticated is the DNA project?
I have been following the recent discussion about YDNA and Chapman
genealogy. My own Chapman line descended from Robert, who settled in
Saybrook, CT, in 1636, has undertaken a YDNA study of our lines descending
from Robert's three sons, John born 1644, Robert born 1646 and Nathanael
born 1653. We have succeeded in identifying two all-male lines of descent
from each son to the present date, and have completed YDNA testing of 37 to
43 loci in five of these men and 26 in the sixth.
Values match in 23 of 26 loci in all six and 28 of 28 loci in three of
these six. The other three did not have test values for all of the same 28
loci for comparison. You can see our results by going to
www.ysearch.org.
At this website select Search For Genetic Matches. On the next screen enter
my User ID 85M4F and click on Search. On the next screen make the following
selections: 26 markers, a maximum genetic distance of 4, and only people
with my last name. Leave the other selections unchanged and click on
Search. This website has added a screening check asking you to type in the
somewhat blurry words you see in a small window. The table which finally
appears should list seven individuals, the six of us who have been tested
and a seventh, CGE8N, for whom I have listed the locus results we believe
are predicted by our test results for Robert the Settler in 1636.
You can compare individuals with one another by checking the boxes in
the compare column and then clicking compare. One choice shows the
closeness of match and the other displays the individual marker values side
by side. If you check on an individual User ID you will see all of his
marker values and a few additional facts near the bottom of the screen.
85M4F and 3VRPT are descendants through Nathanael, TWPS6 and YWDCY through
Robert, and 9QSVN and WCQKE through John. All lines except mine include 10
to 11 generations, enough to expect a few mutation changes in YDNA markers.
I am an eighth generation from Robert the Settler of Saybrook. This
reflects a custom of passing inheritance to the youngest son in my line.
If you have any questions, let me know. Rob
