I've heard, thus far, of very few clear matches on the previous DNA
studies - part of why I never signed up for it. I'm wondering if we
Chapmans aren't a readily-cuckholded, dying-out sort. Maybe we
Chapman men are innately such bad fathersand husbands that our our
actual children dismay of ever passing on our heritage, and our wives
sneak outside the lineage to bear the children of other men?
I'm kidding - at least, I believe I am. There are other explanations,
of course, undocumented adoption being but one.
The whole genetic angle seems fine in theory, but I wonder about its
true relevence. I remind myself from time to time that I and the
Thomas Chapman from whom I'm erronously alledged to descend share but
1 part in 4096 of genetic essence. In other words, I bear no more
resemblance to him than would occur due to chance - with the exception
of whatever features and qualities are on the minimal Y chromosome.
In that only 250 known genes exist on Y, and only 25,000 are known in
all human chromosomes (a third again more than a roundworm), the Y
only carries 1 in 100 genes. So, Thomas Chapman and I would have
little in common, other than being a couple of white guys.

I had my husband's uncle tested over three years ago. He's
now 88 and is the
last male in the direct Chapman line in the family. We've been hoping to
prove his descent from William Chapman who first appeared in Connecticut in
1657. So far, however, we haven't gotten a single match - not even a 10 out of 12
- nothing!! I alternately wonder if he was left here from some alien space
ship or if something in the testing process went wrong.
