I got started by signing up to the free project at SMGF (
www.smgf.org).
Since then I have extended their results by buying additional tests.
Personally, I'm think it is unnecessarily limiting to use the Family Tree
site (or any other commercial concern that doesn't accept results from any
source). I'm travelling at the moment so have limited internet access but as
a (retired) software developer that maintains several websites, I think we
should be better served if we create our own website for sharing DNA data.

I recommend Family Tree yDNA testing. I wouldn't waste time or
money on
the 12 marker test, go straight for a minimum 37.
