Ed,
I missed that your email came through the
chapman-dna-l, so am forwarding my answer for others
to see as well as your questions. Probably will be
helpful for others too.

Ed,
Wow. I am the Ggrandson of Wm. E. Chapman, but to
your questions first.
1, There is a place on the sign-up form to tell
Family Tree DNA whether you want only the project
matches to be reported back or all matches to be
reported back - they are not made members of the
project. Since there are a lot of families with the
same first 12 markers, I am getting those matches
reported. Since none of those has matched on the
next
13 markers and they are not Chapmans, there is
little
interest in follow up investigation. There could
possibly be interest in case of a name change,
adoption or 'non-paternal event.'
2, It would be more meaningful for you to be tested
in the Emery project or have one of your Chapman
relatives join the Chapman project. Most of the
Family Tree DNA projects are 'surname' projects for
males with the designated surname. Alternatively
there is an MTDNA test that's available and
informative for both male and female - see the
familytreedna website.
Now my Ggrandfather was from Ohio, born in 1830s and
married Louvina Holdren from Ohio. His father Hiram
came from Pennsylvania, married Mary Sparks. There
were other Wm. E. Chapmans in that line.
