Surname:
-------------------------
Solomon A. Chaplin (I have seen his last name spelled a number of ways,
Chaplain, Chaplan, Chapman, etc., he could neither read nor write so it
made no difference to him) married Mary A. Helton 6 April 1828 in Knox
County, Kentucky. In 1830 he, his family and a number of his wife's relatives
migrated to Shelby County, Ilinois due to an epidemic of Malaria in Knox
County. In 1848 he agreed to purchase 20 acres of land in Moultrie County,
Illinois for $25.00 and in 1849 the land went back to the seller for non-payment.
His name disappeared from the text of Moultrie County that same year and
it is believed that he died of Cholera which was prevalent in the area
he lived but this has never been documented. He is believed to be buried
in the Helton Family Cemetery in Shelby County, Illinois but unfortunately
this cannot be documented. If anyone has any information as to his date
of birth, place of birth, names of his parents, etc., several of us would
really appreciate it.
Sincerely,
Charles M. Chaplin
