I can't find a direct tie to a William Frank Chaplin (your William) in my father's
book "Ancestors and Kin." However, there are a number of male Chaplins who are
not traced in the book past their birth and marriage who could have been the ancestor of
your William. John Chaplin I is known to have had only one son, John Chaplin II. John II
had 3 sons: William I, Benjamin, and John III. The book only traces the children of
William I. Descendants of the other two sons could be your William's GG Grandfather.
Then William I had 2 sons who married: Thomas Chaplin b 1742 had 3 sons who were known to
have married: John, William, and Benjamin (any of which could be your Williams' G
Grand father). The other son of WIlliam I was William II, b 1767 who had 2 sons who
married: Thomas who only had a daughter and William Fripp Chaplin I, b 1767 (who could
have been your William's grandfather).
Willima Fripp I had 2 wives and 7 sons by his first wife: Joshua, Benjamin, Richard,
Saxby, Paul, Archibald, and Thomas (the book provides details only on Saxby, without
reporting if any of the other sons married). The second wife produced 3 sons who married:
James P, William Fripp II, and John Joshen. (Except for Saxby, any of these sons could
be your William's father.)
Saxby Chaplin's first son was William Fripp Chaplin III, b 1833 (close to the birth of
your William). I suspect this William and your William were cousins, somehow. The book
tracks all of the children of Saxby in some detail.
From John I through Saxby, all of the Chaplins reported in the book
lived in coastal SC: St Helena's Parish or the Beaufort District. It's
conceivable that some (unreported) branch of this family moved to Piedmont SC, Darlington
County.
