This whole Hollingsworth-Pudney-Chaplin-Collis-Mathews relationship is getting more and
more curious.
As I understand it, Frederick John Hollingsworth of Clapham married:
1) Sarah _______________;
2.)Rebecca Pudney;
3) Jane Collis
I note that in the 1881 Census Frederick is married to Sarah but that Rebecca Pudney and
John Chaplin are listed as visitors in the household. I understand that John Chaplin was
one of the founders of Chaplin & Collis; presumably Jane Collis is some relative of
the Collis.
I also note that there is a Charles Hollingsworth in Halstead in 1881, and that he listed
his place of birth as Thaxted. I am aware that other Hollingsworths from Thaxted settled
in Surrey, although not in such prosperous circumstances as Frederick.
Rebecca Pudney Hollingsworth's estate was probated in 1886, and it seems peculiar that
a 28 year old wife would have assets that required probate. I have not seen any details of
the estate to understand what was going on--have you?
Do you have any thoughts on how the Hollingsworths, Pudneys, Chaplins, Collises and
Mathews got together in the first place. Annie Mathews thinks that they met at boarding
school, but I suspect it may be a result of the social structure of 19th century Essex.
