Hi all. I copied the following from some forgotten source about fifty
years ago -
'Earliest references of the name CHAPLIN - from the Office of
"Chaplain", in Scotland.
HENRY THE CHAPLAIN & HUMPHREY THE CHAPLAIN are charter witnesses in the
reign of Malcom 1V
JOHN, called CHAPELAYN, Burgess of Aberdeen in 1271
HENRY LE CHAPELEYN of Roxburghshire rendered homage in 1296. His seal
reads "S HENRICI CAPELLANI"
ROGER CAPELLANUS was Custumar of Edinburgh in 1327
ALECIA dicta CHAPELANE filia quondam ADE CHAPELANE, burgess of
Aberdeen, is recorded in 1310 (I think)
RICHARD SCHAPILLAYN or SCHAPELLAYN held a burgage in Dundee in 1344
(ref - Highland Papers, Vol 2, page 134, edited by J R N Macphail,
Edinburgh 1914-1934)
JOHN CHAPELLANE was made guild brother in right of his wife in
Edinburgh in 1462.
PETER CHAPLAN or CHAPLANE was parson of Dennennow (Dunins) in 1526.
RICHARD CHAIPLAND was a member of Scots parliament for Haddington 1644"
During my own research I have found CHAIPLANE, CHAEPLEN, CHAEPLIN,
CHEPLENE, CHAPLAND, CHAPLAIN - and my own maiden name - CHAPLIN.
Regards. Elva Clark
