Joseph B. Hicks, 70, of Poplar Bluff died Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2005 at Westwood Hills
Healthcare Center.
Mr. Hicks was born Dec. 18, 1934 in Poplar Bluff, the son of Alba A. Hicks and Leota Hicks
Gibbs. He joined the Army in February 1952, where he served his country proudly for 20
years. Seventeen of those years he was a paratrooper with the 11th Airborne Division, the
82nd Airborne Division, First Special Forces, the 173rd Airborne Brigade and the 101st
Airborne Division. Some of his duty stations were Augsburg, Germany, Okinawa and Korea. He
also served in the Vietnam War, where he was awarded a Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster
for meritorious service; the Army commendation Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal for
outstanding service. He retired in May 1972 at Fort Campbell, Ky. with the rank of Chief
Warrant Officer W-3. After returning to Poplar Bluff, he went to work for the Missouri
Pacific Railroad as a customer service representative. He retired in 1995 from the Union
Pacific in St. Louis, Mo.
On Feb. 24, 1954, he married Charlene Wilson. She survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Karen Wagganer of Poplar Bluff and Vicki Evans and
husband, Robert, of Springfield; two sons, Charles Hicks and wife, Kim, and Brian Hicks,
all of Poplar Bluff;
