My grandfather, Thomas Henry Chaplin (born at Gillingham, Kent in 1900) served in the
Merchant Navy during WWI. Our family archive includes postcards from the Archangel area,
suggesting he was involved in taking British troops to that town during the Russian civil
war. His merchant navy ID card gives his ship as the "Orita". I gather this was
an ex Pacific Steam Navigation Co. ship, but did it go to Russia and if so, when? Can
anyone suggest possible sources of information on the merchant navy's involvement in
this campaign? Thanks in advance.
