Ferris Wins Demolition Derby
BATH - "it was the first time I ever saw one," exclaimed an excited
23-year-old Dave Ferris of Bath Monday night.
This exclamation came after he had copped the main feature event of Staney Roberts
demolition derby Monday night at the Bath Fair. Ferris took home the $200 first prize
money.
Ferris, in his very first competition, also won the first heat. Don
Chalmers captured the second heat with Larry Weaver of Trumansburg as the Runner up
winner.
===============================================================
1969, Steuben County Fair, Bath, NY
A good sized crowd of nearly 2,000 thrill seekers were in the grandstand for the opening
attraction: the crash-bang Stoney Roberts Demolition Derby.
Two brothers are striving to make it a "family affair". John Ferris of Bath
took home the $200 first prize money after winning the future event.
His brother, David, a complete novice at the car crashing sport last year, won it in 1968.
David Ferris was bashed out of contention in the feature but John battled Larry Studley
of Cuba, the second place winner, for the hard-earned victory.
Top three places in the three heats were eligible to drive in the feature. Thirty-nine
drivers competed.
Second to John Ferris in the opening round was Tim Stage of Penn Yan and scoring third
was Richard Calhoun, also of Penn Yan. Second heat wound up in a tie between John Clark
of Bath and Studley with Ronald Schmidt of Penn Yan placing third. Following Dave Ferris
in the third heat were Charles Piazza of Bath and Roger Devinte of Batavia.
