I went to Springfield 3 years ago looking for Samuel, this
is what I found. The indians came during King Phillips War
and burned Springfield to the ground.Samuel was at his
son Japhet's house and was buried nearby.Later he was
moved to Elm Street Cemetery, the only cemetery in town.
In 1848 when the railroad came to town most of the bodies
were moved to springfield Cemetery.Don't know where his
body was moved to this point. Some people told me that
the marker may of been so worn out it couldn't be read
and no one knew it was him.I've also read in some reference
books in Springfield By chapins that they feel that Chester
W. Chapin involved in the railroads moved him to Chicopee
burial grounds where a beautiful Mausoleum was built. This
cemetery came into existance because of an argument
between Chester and the city of Springfield over the
mausoleum. There are no markers to indicate if he's there.
There are no records to prove it.I have written to the caretaker
of that cemetery who is also a decendant of Samuel and
he doesn't know where Samuel is either.I thought that was
interesting that they told you the body had been shipped
back to England ,they didn't tell me that.If you ever get the
mystery solved I'd love to know where he is too.Good Luck!
