Ashtabula Telegraph June 1885
The anticipated death of Mr. John N. Green, of this city, occurred
at his residence on Park Street on Monday evening at eight o'clock,
at the age of 63 years, 6 months and 3 days.
Several weeks ago he was taken ill with inflammatory rheumatism, which
was followed by Bright's disease, and which was the immediate cause of
his death. He was born in Remsen, Oneida county, N.Y., on November 29th,
1820, and at the age of eighteen moved to Antwerp, NY, where he remained
until 1868, and was engaged in mercantile and hotel business. He
continued in the mercantile business until 1871, when he moved to
[Jackson], Mich., and engaged in insurance business. In Feb., 1876,
he came to Ashtabula where he continued in the insurance business until
the date of his death, for several years past being associated with
Mr. Fred A. Williams. He was married in 1846 to Maria Chapin, and two
children, both daughters, were the fruit of this union, and all of whom
survived him, one of his daughters Mrs. Geo. sherwood, now residing in
Lowville, N.Y.
The funeral will occur on Wed. afternoon at 2 p.m. at his residence, and
will be conducted by the Rev. S. B. Hershey, of the Congregational
church,
after which the remains will be removed to Antwerp, N.Y., for interment.
The deceased, when in health, was [apparently] of a robust constitution,
of a pleasant social disposition, and was generally respected and
esteemed. In church and pemperance matters he was an energetic worker,
and accomplished much good by his example and practices.
