Susan,
I sure would like to "talk" to you in detail about this. If you would like to
do this privately, please email me.
I have the same children listed as you do for Charles Chapin and Silence, but I wonder if
Cisera and Silence may be the same person. Cisera Chapin is not listed as a daughter of
Charles and Silence in the Rev. War Pension file #R1858, there is instead a daughter named
Silence born March 27, 1775. I realize that maybe Cisera died before the papers were
filed, but perhaps Cisera Chapin was really Silence Cisera or some similar combination and
she was called Cisera.
Thanks for the dates for Tirzah. I would like the names of her children's spouses.
Do you know what became of these children of Charles and Mary?
Mary .........
Elam (I have lots of information for him)
Electa
Benjamin (always wondered if he went to Canada or Indiana)
Triphena
Camma
Festus
Do you have "proof" that Maria C. HAKES was the 2nd wife of Gordon Chapin? I
too found that marriage:
Chapin, Gordon Spouse : Hakes, Maria
Marriage date : Oct 24, 1845
County of record : Huron Co.
Sex : M
and Gordon is suppose to have left Canada for OH in 1840, but the application (for
license) was not returned to Huron County. "The people may not have been married, may
have returned it to a different county, or may have been married and never returned the
license."
Also, there is a Maria C. Hakes buried in Huron Co.:
HAKES, MARIE C. 1823-1892 Mother
Buried Edwards Grove Cemetery, Ripley Township
If this is the same Maria Hakes, then perhaps they never married or were divorced.???
I have been trying to find Gordon in OH for a long time, he seems to have missed the 1840
census. I always hoped, that if he was this Gordon, then perhaps his first wife would be
buried in that area. No Luck. (I am still searching for her name and vitals)
BTW ..... it is possible that Gordon had a son named Gordon, I have only knowledge of 3
children for him, and there is 10 years difference between the first two and the last two.
That's a span of 20 years, so my guess is that there are more children.
By 1844, Gordon's 3 children were in LaGrange Co., IN, but perhaps Gordon, didn't
join them there until later (as the HAKES, marriage application, was in 1845)
At any rate, Gordon is in Indiana without a wife in 1850. He died there in 1855. (not in
Iowa as most research states .... at one time IA was the abbreviation for Indiana)
I hope to hear from you again,
Greatful for you help.
