OK. First of all, while trying unsuccessfully to find the Chapin genealogy
at
Ancestry.com I found a different article on the Chapin roots at Paignton,
England, and saved it for those who want it.
Second, Howard Millar Chapin was Librarian of the Rhode Island Historical
Society and very prolific. His father was a physician. He was a
descendant of Seth Chapin of Mendham whose notes he used as a source.
REV. SETH CHAPIN, A.M., of Providence was b. 25th June, 1783, at Mendon; d.
in Providence, 19th April, 1850; graduated from Brown University with the
degree of A.B. in 1808, and went to the Andover Theological Seminary; was
ordained in 1812 and preached at many places, among which the principal are
Hillsboro, New Hampshire, from 1812 to 1816; Hanover, Massachusetts, 1819 to
1824; Mansfield, 1825; Hunter, New York, from 1825 to 1827; Attleboro,
Massachusetts, 1832, and West Granville from 1833 to 1835; he bore the above
arms; he resided in Providence until his death; was the author of "Duty and
Dependence of Sinners," "Likeness to Christ," etc.; m. 27th May, 1810, Mary
BICKNELL, dau. of Judge Joshua BICKNELL of Barrington.

To All Inquiring Minds:
The Mormon Library has a book "The Family of Chapin in Europe."
Microfilm and Microfiche Order Card. Beginning # 0022325.
I hope this explains the French Connection.
