Hey, every time I try to reply to this thread, I get some stupid shouting
Harry Houdini ad that has no mechanism to close it. And I notice the url
below looks funny.

If indeed the chapin family came from France, it had to be before 1500 as
Deacon Samuel's grandfather was born in England. This is according to
early genealogies. His grandfather was Roger Chapyn:
1. Roger Chapyn, born BEF 1540 in England, died BEF 1590 in England. He
married Miss Unknown, BEF 1560 in England, born in England, died AFT 1590
in England.
2. John Chapin, born ABT 1566 in Totnes, co. Devon, England, baptized 25
Sep 1566 in Totnes, co. Devon, England, died ABT 1600, buried 3 Jun 1600
in Paignton, co. Devon, England. He married Philippa Easton, 14 Sep 1590
in Paignton, co. Devon, England, born ABT 1565 in England, died in
England.
3. Samuel Chapin, born ABT 1598 in co. Devon, England, baptized 8 Oct
1598 in Paignton, co. Devon, England, died 11 Nov 1675 in Springfield,
Hampden Co., MA.
Samuel Chapin was christened and married in St. John The Baptist
Church Paignton, Devonshire, England.
My mother is a Chapin descendant!
