Not sure whose history. Alot has been published on the Chapin family. I think
there's even a Chapin database at Rootsweb Worldconnect that cnotains everything in
the big Chapin genealogy.
I think you'll find a statue of the guy in the town square or outside a church or
something. May not even be what he looked like. Alot of mythology grew up around him.
Yuo might want to look into the founding of Springfield; now that is a fascinating story.
Pynchon's story is far more fascinating than Chapin's, and alot of the founding
families had interesting stories. I've found stuff online. A hsitory of longmeadow
or something, and somewhere there's a book that discusses Pynchon's personal
history and his running of Springfield as a medieval fiefdom. It was the sort of venture
taht New France made a practice of.
In Springfield, there have got to be a historical society and more than likely a museum or
two; look them up online and call them to see what is available. It's possible an
early church or two are still there as well.
