After looking at microfilm records at library yesterday, I see that Timothy
and Oliver Chapin were neighbors of Ira Smith in 1820 census, but not in same
household. This was in Wolcott, Seneca Co./now Wayne Co. NY. The Wolcott NY
land records on (http.//www.rootsweb.com/~nywayne/townships/wolcott.) say that
Ira Smith bought 59 3/4 acres at$4.50, Lot 42 on Sept. 4, 1811. This was
probably when he married Jane Chapin as first child was born l8l3, Ira being about
25 yr. and Jane about 20 yr.
This was one of the first land contracts in Wolcott. They may have come from
Mass. at that time (?) since census always says "born in Mass." Later,
Timothy and Oliver Chapin were there--by 1820. Wolcott was considered in Seneca Co.
at that time.
The 1820 census has an older man (45+) and three girls under 10 (?) for Ira
Smith besides he and Jane and Ira Chapin Smith (under l0 yr.). I wonder who
they are.
Thanks for listening. Elizabeth
